hmmm, the scroll bar missing in the query box must be a vista thing as I do have a scroll bar (build cvs today)

Other thoughts:

I'v been paying closer attention to software and devices at work to get some better interface ideas. Here is an idea that could unclutter the display a bit. Notice the cursor and dialog box.

Would you want the box to be constantly displayed? I think that would be excessive. I have noted before that the cursor position (centre of screen) is not indicated graphically at all, making it fairly useless imHo.

Dialog shows after approx 2-3 seconds at rest. It doesn't show while cursor is moving. For a clear screen you move cursor off chart.

Why not use the Leg/Route box for this purpose?
Alternatively it could be incorporated in the status bar.
I suggest the speed and course should be shown as "10.5 KN - 234 TR"

Incidentally,my Vista does not show a working scroll bar in the Query box.
I can see the scroll bar but there is no 'button' to move it with.
Perhaps because the page is not filled up as yet?

I still feel the whole Query box is far to large and dominating, could be a lot smaller and elegant if it was not combined with the Object query box.
i.e. I am guessing they both use the same interface.

It does also duplicate the measure function to some extent..

I do like the time-delay idea.

Incidentally, how did you put the new boat icon into the source for compilation Mani?

Nope, I'm using Vista Ultimate and the scroll bar works.

The AIS Query box could look something like this:

You can't yet... this was gimped.

Another thought ( this was also gimped ) is having other essential data in the chart display box in a rotation. This makes it easier to see as the font is pretty large.

Example animation:

Nice animation.. although I wouldn't consider the chart data essential at all times.. I would rather migrate this into a properties box, whilst rotating SOG/COG and LEG/ROUTE data?

sinbad, I'm in agreement with you again - your AIS Query box example is perfect

manimaul, good thinking re making the text larger but I think I'd find the animated text irritating. Sorry.

This may be coincidence, but I flipped from Google Earth back to OpenCPN and tried to scroll out. Video driver crashed and flipped me to a low res display. I exited all programs and then after reboot, all is fine. But just in case it's something you need to look at, here is the last of the log file.

Klaas and Dave...

Am I missing something here? Are we talking about the AIS query box? A left mouse click in the scroll slide area to the right does NOTHING for me?? (Vista)

Reading back a few posts I now realize Klaas means the OBJECT query box.
Unless the text exceeds the height of the box, there is no visible scroll button. I have so far not found text large enough to test.

There is text that large in the Panama Canal in the "Caution Area" items. Also in the Suez, but there they only show on the charts to the entrances.

Thanks to all for the interest which you have shown in my problem. I have read a lot about it (hard to understand...), and I begin to think, as Cagney says, that I will have to live with it... (more, I have a lot of equal lines)
I am new on Ubuntu and have no experience of udev and other things like that, so I hope the problem will be fix soon.
