Chart buttons missing from bottom of window

For a couple years, I've had an intermittent problem with the chart buttons missing from the bottom of the OpenCPN window when I first launch. The buttons reappear after a change such as maximizing the window or (in the case of tablets) changing between landscape and portrait mode. This problem has happened under Windows XP, 7, and 8.1 running a variety of hardware (desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet) and a variety of versions of OpenCPN (3.0, 3.2.2, 3.3.xxxx). I've always been able to work around the issue, but I wonder whether it's been reported before. Is there a Flyspray task that has been assigned for this?

I wanted to bring up this apparent bug again. I've seen it on every computer I run (home, work, tablet) running every Windows OS version (XP, 7, 8).

I think I have finally figured out why I see it an almost nobody else does: I unchecked the box for the status bar. This is a critical difference, because when I activate the status bar, the button bar shows properly every time. But when I uncheck the status bar and restart O, the buttons are missing EVERY TIME until I maximize and/or resize the window.

I'm hoping that with this additional piece of info, someone else will be able to duplicate this bug on their Windows system. It is now completely consistent for me - no longer an intermittent problem, but a fully reproducible one.

Is there a Flyspray task that has been assigned for this?

Don't know but you can check it here OpenCPN::Tracker All Projects: Tasklist
and if not, register and enter a Tracker task under bugs, once you have the details all figured out.

I cannot reproduce this on Win7, Win8, or XP.

Anyone else? Any other hints? Does it do this on latest Beta 3.3.2302?

see this on my W7 PC.

With Status Bar enabled, disable ("apply" is not sufficient, so "ok")
OCPN without Status bar --> close
Restart and no piano.
Resize (+/-) didn't help but enabling the Status Bar from settings brings the piano back.

With S63 and CM on the canvas - the Australian scenario from the other thread

I have seen this on every versions of O that I've used for the past 3 years, and on every PC I've used, including 5 different PCs that I currently use.

Based on the way that you described it, it sounds like you zoomed the chart by pressing the (+/-) buttons. That is not was I was saying in my description. You need to resize the whole window by either maximizing (double-click in title bar or click "maximize" icon), or by dragging a corner of the window. When I do this, the piano keys immediately reappear.

What happens when you do Ctrl + B Show/Unshow Chart Bar. Does the Chart Bar then appear?

You will not get it to disapper by maximizing. Doing that will make it reappear, not disappear.


Here's a procedure to try, with the results I got:

1. Go to User Interface settings and uncheck "Show Status Bar" Click OK to exit dialog.
2. Quit out of OpenCPN
3. Launch OpenCPN - no buttons appear
4. Press Ctrl-B repeatedly - no buttons appear
5. Go into Settings. Stay in Display, do not change anything. Click OK to exit dialog
6. Press Ctrl-B repeatedly - no buttons appear
7. Go into Settings. Go to User Interface menu, but do not change anything. Click Cancel to exit dialog - no buttons appear
8. Press Ctrl-B repeatedly - no buttons appear
9. Go into Settings. Go to User Interface menu, but do not change anything. Click OK to exit dialog - buttons appear, or they appear after pressing Ctrl-B (depending on how many times you pressed Ctrl-B previously)
10. After this, Ctrl-B toggles the buttons correctly until you quit again

For me, this problem was an intermittent problem until I realized that the status bar setting affected the display of the piano buttons. Once I discovered that connection, it became fully reproducible.

So I suspect that the behavior is also connected to some other option that one of us has checked, and the other has unchecked. Here's my .ini file. Maybe you can cut/paste relevant parts into your .ini file and see if you can duplicate my situation, or at least do a side-by-side compare of the two .ini files:

Can reproduce this on the Win8.1 machine as well.
And yes, changing the size of the window will make the chart bars reappear.

- closed OCPN with Status bar enabled
- editing the ini file SB=0
- opening OCPN --> same effect

So, what i different with your systems??
We are running all the same Wx version, aren't we?

Try as I might, I cannot reproduce this effect.

Will you try this to show the effect with a minimal, default config file?

1. Save (rename) your config file.
2. Save (rename) your CHARTLIST.DAT file.
3. Start OCPN, add one chart directory.
4. Switch off status bar.
5. Stop O, start O again, and prove the effect with a minimal config file.
6. Report results.

You may then recover your saved config and chartlist files.

with a virgin config.ini and Chartlist.dat the behavior is correct, not the one we have observed.

I tested with some US raster as one group and with the French IENCs as another one. Always just one. So no chart types mixed.



A side effect: I was not able to get the S-63 charts to show up in this context.
PI enabled, UserPermit and InstallPermit entered, Force Data Base rebuilt and no. No outlines....
