Too funny....how about a simple buttom on them main screen that allows you to toggle between sat view and selected view. Simpler then a BCI...

In order to feature chart quilting with reasonable performance, MX Mariner does not read .kap files directly. IMO the BSB format is too clunky for reasonable quilting performance. So, for reading .kap files on Android, I'd recommend Mariner Navigator Lite by Ronald Koenig. However, it will only read one chart/.kap file at a time.

As for cached satellite imagery for offline use... you could use something like MOBAC to create a .gemf file and drop it in /sdcard/mxmariner

As an iOS developer I just wanted to say this ranked really high in "cool factor" for me. Major congrats on your project! It looks fantastic so far!

Whats Droid dev like if I may ask? Have you found them to be accommodating with documentation, toolkits and publishing? Whats the predominate language used?

iOS is a lot of fun, but Objective-C, not so much. Xcode does make up for that a bit and I am quite amazed at how much it has to offer being free.

Good luck with your project and I hope it does well if you plan on going for profit.

Keep your copy of MOBAC alive as google is on the warpath. See

I've really enjoyed programming for Android so far. It's pretty much java with xml for gui layout and configuration. I'm also happy that Google chose Eclipse to be the development environment since I'm already at home there.

As for MX Mariner goals. I pretty much started the project as a fun hobby. Only two months old, It's hard to say if the current momentum will keep up but I'm pretty thrilled with the response. As for profit, I've managed to earn enough to by a second tablet for further dev testing and also have paid to upgrade my web hosting for the in app downloadable chart data. So, still a hobby at this point but still lots of fun.

MX Mariner is open source with a BSD license. The source is released on a delayed schedule with what is on the market. The source for creating the quilted chart data files is also open source and written in python.

Have just acquired Blackberry Playbook with 16gb memory and built in GPS. Works well with Mapdroyd and Google Maps. Conversion of your app (APK) to Blackberry Format (BAR) should be easy using Blackberry's conversion software. Any chance you will consider doing it?

Have been using New Zealand chart data but coming up your way soon so downloaded region 14 charts. They are on the SD card but unable to select. Only NZ charts available. Any ideas.

Later this year, with the release of the Linux 3.3 kernel, Android Apps will run natively on Linux. Look for the autumn releases of Fedora,Ubuntu and OpenSUSE ++, or compile yourself as soon as the release is available.

The 3.3 kernel release will let you boot an Android userspace with no modifications, but not very good power management. The 3.4 kernel release will hopefully have the power management hooks that Android needs in it, along with a few other minor missing infrastructure pieces that didn't make it into the 3.3 kernel release.
