Android Development Underway

This is a bit of a teaser to see what kind of interest there is out there for Android. I'm working on a project I'm calling AOCPN <Android Open Chart Plotter Navigator>.

More details and project website to come...

There are so few apps out there that any addition to the market would be very welcome. One MUST have feature is an option to make the screen NOT shut off. Can't tell you how frustrating it is on the navionics app to have to continually touch the screen to ensure it stays open.

Already done my friend... one of the first features I built in. I've been using/testing the app every day up here in Alaska during the day and night.

The feature set of AOCPN is very basic... (which is good IMO)

--Features

--Navigates offline, no internet access required
--Quilted charts
--Day, Dusk and Night Modes
--Speed and Course Display
--GPS Follow, Chart Panning and Zooming
--Screen stays on while app is running

Interesting, I use Marine Traffic. Their app is pretty sweet. AOCPN will most likely display AIS information at some point (when cell coverage is available). It's on feature list.

I am also using Marine Traffic for MY area and I normally contribute from my Ubatuba based AIS receiver which is down for maintenance at the moment.

Have a look: (Pan and zoom for other areas)

Also available on Android:

Nice, the more apps the better.
Only other useful one I found was BlueNMEA.

Re: Android Development Underway

Any plans for CM93 support? That would be awesome, as it's often the only easily available chart source and I've been dying to have CM93 on a handheld for years since the first PDA's came out.

When can we download a beta of your app????

Re: Android Development Underway

Definitely interested. It would make a pretty good piloting aid offshore. Will it work with the BSB charts available (for free) on the NOAA website?

Re: Android Development Underway

Thanks everyone for showing interest. I plan on making the app available soon. I am working on launching a website for the app. It's going to be Open Source like OpenCPN, licensed under a 2-Clause BSD license.

Vadrian, the answer is yes... indirectly. The BSBv3 charts need to be processed on a PC first. Why?... Processing power, battery life and SD-Cards. I pre-quilt the charts and convert them into a special SD-Card, Phone/Tablet friendly chart file. I will be releasing a program to do this as well as making several pre-made NOAA BSB regions available for download on the website.

This is similar to what EarthNC does except that they keep all the data on their own servers which makes the app require internet access to work. EarthNC allows you to download small regions, but this takes time and tons of space on the SD card. What we're doing is squishing all of the data onto a small file (smaller than the actual BSB charts used to create it).
