I don't get it.

What's wrong with this idea?

2) What do you believe you need to make that happen? (It seems like you are saying you need/want a 52+ catamaran for two people)
3) What is you budget?
4) What is your tolerance for unmitigated risk? (IOW, if you did buy them, try to get it work, utterly screw it up and THEN had to pay to have it removed -- how bad would that hurt?)

4) scrap value on aluminum would pay about 1/2 the price i will be paying for them. plus the 4 extra engines.

3) 200,000

1) the goal is living room for two adults, two? three? kids and two dogs, and a cat. we want to keep the cost per mile traveled very low. to be realistic 99% of travel will be coastal. and 99% of stationary time will be at anchor.
we have no worry about speed when moving. my goal was 4kts. 40-60 miles a day is plenty for coastal travel.

we want to do a hybrid powerplant. using electric motors to drive the props, and having a generator for crossings. using the entire top of the yacht for solar power. solar power has become so cheap its almost stupid to put a diesel generator for full time use, on a boat with ample space up top.

2) 1200 sq ft, low power requirements. the more cash we can save the happier we will be.

all fiberglass has osmosis. they dont last forever.
i love how driven they are thou. i have never seen it before.
wonder what kind of cash they have into it.
i have heard $3 a pound is what it cost to build fiberglass.

What do you think off the general design off the catamaran in the photos?

Comfortable?
Seaworthy?
Sound construction?
What would you do different if you were the builder?

Re: This May Sound Silly.... Mono Cat?

This idea comes up at the boat design forum from time to time... And I can't say that I didn't have the same idea years ago.

52'+ is near impossible to build on your own, even 40' is too hard for a first timer. It would be better to work two jobs onland and save every penny for a few years...

I'm not saying this to discourage you, and I am in the same 'boat' as you. I would like a stable catamaran with enough solar power to operate it. But, I don't see much research being done into efficient wave piercing or SWATH type of catamarans. And I would also like to see the techniques used in boat building become easier and quicker to do. (30' boats in 60 days, 40' in 180 days) I will say that I like the design of the huge catamaran that the guy is building a few posts up. I'm not sure why he built it that big, but it would be nice once it is finished. It is the flat surfaces of that boat and Beau's aluminum boat that help speed things up I would think.

Re: This May Sound Silly.... Mono Cat?

If you buy two of these you can glue them together with 5200.

at 500 each that is 1000 dollars plus the price of the 5200

Re: This May Sound Silly.... Mono Cat?

you are correct.
those are my old posts.
i have been brainstorming for a while now while i make a final plan.
i know people have been rude on here before, but keep this in mind...
i could have gotten a new screen name, no one would have known me,
they would have never figured out who i was. i am not ashamed of things i
have talked about in the past, and if i didnt like you then i dont like you now,
and vice-versa. so whatever you think of me, remember, i yam who i yam.

i am not a boat designer, but when browsing plans, i cannot say i ever came to one that said, "build from wood, then coat with fiberglass"
with the exception of the top half of the boat. i know some were wood cored thou. no idea how long a screw and glue joint would hold up.
its well within his right to try? a few years back some guy floated down the hudson on a raft of wood and plastic barrels.....
i bet if he cut all the joints out and made them fiberglass he would have something not so bad?

with a fully cut kit i was thinking i could do the structure in a year flat, fit-out in a year flat, and after the second year be off on it.
as for working two jobs, there are two incomes in my house now, and some different needs as well
