CF Member Subject of Article : Boat Alexandra

I came across a recent article shared on Facebook, that is about a CF Member, and though CF is not mentioned in the article, I recognized the boat.

The article includes some large closeup photos of the boat Alexandra, which has sailed around the world.

The boat is a Bristol 27. Very simply equipped. And I know many threads here on CF are about gear "required" for sailing around the world, so this may interest other members, especially those who cannot afford the latest boats and gear, etc.

The thrust of the favorable article is that the boat is simple, without a motor, and that the sailor, Sean, did not require much to make his way around the world.

Been following his progress around the planet over the last 3 years or so through his posts on CF.. he is also an active contributor to OpenCPN..
He's done a helluva lot with very little so Respect.
Even if I do give him a little poke now and then..

What he has accomplished with virtually nothing is nothing short of amazing. Props to him! Although some of his ideals and thoughts go counter to the world at large.

I've seen him catch a lot of crap on this forum for his boat and the way he is doing it. He seems to disregard social norms and even plenty of laws of whatever country he may be in at any given time, and someday that might get him trouble. He's an unrepentant radical.

I absolutely respect the man's abilities as a sailor and cruiser, and more of you should.

Thank you steady hand for a long awaited reality check. Sean has done much more than i hav e bitten off in my sailing life, and a huge hats off to him. I lived on a 30’ texas tri for years and traveled florida and the islands with a good compass lead line and charts, and a worn out seagull outboard. Food was potatoes, cabbage, onions and what ever i caught or speared, life was good, warm beer and warm cheap island rum a luxury,so altho intresting and sometimes amusing the threads I read, of peopleand there wants.... what does one really need, wants are another world. So now 35 years later I m sailing floridas gulf in a pearson with new sails ,a good compass, charts and a new yanmar diesel, lead line and a smile in my heart, oh happy day..... 😉😎

Certainly has handled some major sailing with a minimal amount of equipment. His accomplishments emphasize the sailor over boat argument. Unfortunately he's managed to leave a dirty wake in places leaving a bad taste with officials that have to clear in other new comers, probably making the new arrivals life's tougher.

Thanks for that one Steady Hand. I love reading these stories. People like Sean and his Bristol 27 and Mike Riley and his Oday 27 making epic ocean voyages reinforces my belief that joining the snobitorium of "Bluewater Boat Owners" is really not necessary to experience an adventure of a lifetime.

Thank you, Steady_Hand. I too enjoyed the story of Sean, but I'm left somewhat confused. In his own description of his Bristol 27 (Bristol27.com » Hull # – Alexandra) he mentions having as many as 3 engines at one time- all electric, including a Minn Kota and a Torqeedo, along with a ballast full of golf cart batteries and using those and the blanket of solar panels shown in the pictures to run up to two engines at a time- though perhaps this was a summary of experiments rather than a real part of passage making. And it sounds like he still has a long haul remaining to make his way around the world to San Francisco.

I hope Sean continues to share with others what worked and what didn't among the tools he chose for his voyages (like the extra bracing on the old Monitor).
