Just how much rum does $500/mo buy anyway? Is it enough to call it living?

Enough to drink yourself into liver failure in 6mo, whereupon they no longer call it a living, it is now a deathing.

The rich go to great lengths to convince us of the myth that only the newest, most expensive boats and gear installed by the most expensive, hired help will do for offshore boats, and anything less is sheer folly. This they do, in a futile attempt to keep the cruising life their exclusive domain.
Those who believe them, waste decades of finite lifetime, following their misdirections. Those who laugh them off the stage, with the contempt they deserve , get out cruising, off their self interest treadmill, and into freedom, far sooner.
When someone tells you the expensive , complex, and time consuming way, is the only logical way, it's time to look for another source of info.

The first chapter to Slocum's book tells the truth of that, Brent..

Often the old boat (or almost anything else for that matter) With a little patience and work is worth more than the shiny new stuff...within limits...

shiny attracts rats. always has, always will. i have worked very very hard to make my boat a boat not a shiny rat attracting object.
i am vwery happy to have bought this boat even tho i ripe about the warter torture--- i am repairing it as fast as i can--which c]=seems to be faster than i was advised--- i knew it wasnt gonna be 5 yrs or 150k--i would never have the money for it if that were the case.
between my curious questions and friends' creative minds, this is gonna be a record breaker-- fast, down and dirty for cheep and good cruising. i have cruised a bit in performance cruiser and dreamed at th same time of how this boat would be under same situations--
got my blood flowing to get this project finished and get to wandering under sail....cheap=creative and motivated.

"The rich go to great lengths to convince us of the myth that only the newest, most expensive boats and gear..."

Ah, but wouldn't that be the factory and brokerage salespeople and the copy writers for the advertisements in the glossy sailing magazines. I don't think the glossy ads have much to do with my reality. But I'm glad there are people to buy shiny nice new boats -- twenty years from now one of those might become my boat! And in the anchorage, I'm not sure you can always tell who is really wealthy.

There is a huge difference between how much it costs to go cruising around the world as the owner of a fairly comfortable and safe boat, and how much it costs simply to enjoy some form or other of sailing. There's a ride for every seat....
