It is a small problem if the remaining crew can't recover the MOB.

A big problem is when the remaining crew cannot handle the boat.

Not too long ago a Polish boat crossed the pond and the man was lost OB. His wife was not able to get the boat to the other side. An evac and abandon were required from otherwise 100% fine boat.

Teach your crews basic sailing skills. This may not save your life but it may save theirs, and the boat.

My understanding of the question is 'How many people have experienced a real MOB incident at sea"
Not some drunk in a marina or an addict tripping on a line or cleat when glued to their phone..
Sailing along and getting knocked overboard by a boom, a backwinded genny or washed overboard by a wave.. or tripping over a deck cleat while checking on their phone if they had coverage yet..

Seems a simple straight question with really only a yes or no answer doesn't it?

This is forum, a topic will become whatever the people replying want it to become. Doesn't appear many CF members are really interested anyway as the poll votes are so low as to be meaningless.

Seems most are about folks falling off pontoons..

It has been privately suggested to me that I could get a better response on the thread if I reword it to:

Try asking how many fell overboard using their new generation anchor and would they have been safer with a CQR or a Bruce..

I think your correct, most don’t sail around the Horn etc.
Most cruise for fun. Being lashed by cold waves and wind isn’t my idea of fun. I don’t even put on flip flops and a shirt unless we are going ashore.
I also think just as a guess that falling off a pontoon is more frequent than a MOB, and surprisingly at least in the US other than finding a boat with a swim platform etc., there is no way out of the water, there are no ladders etc, usually. I’m amazed at that I would assume Insurence at least would require it.
When our Daughters Lab fell in, I had to get her out on a neighbors swim platform.
So while falling off a pontoon may be funny, depending on the individuals health and water temp, it can end bad.

Someone said there were few answers but I can see 30 votes. 30 is quite a sample given our population.

There are relatively few votes because this is a sailing related question.

If someone wants hundreds of votes one starts a thread related to beach bars, guns or other trending social media topics.

I don't generally cast votes because I'm usually on the Droid app and the poll doesn't show up unless I'm on my laptop. I find commentary more interesting anyway than yes/no polls with questions that are too full of nuance to be able to provide meaningful data.

I mentioned these vests on another thread that turn you around if you pull the latch on your tether, you could extend the secondary tether that attaches to the back to allow you to trail behind the boat rather than bash into the side and through the wake.

I've said this before too without response but the person in the water is better able to see the boat than the boat see the MOB. If you have a laser pointer on the vest the person in the water can point it towards the boat and be seen in any light and in most/if not all conditions and for long distances. It would also work on search aircraft. Also have AIS MOB on the vests.

I am sure many overboardee's ? have drowned watching search boats criss cross near them but not see them.

On a side note, if you see the person go over I don't understand how a cruising boat wouldn't stop in less than a couple of hundred meters - Turn into the wind drop the main halyard and throw the jib sheet of the winch.

Biggest concern is waking from a sleep to find out you are alone. Don't do dumb things on single watches, save them for when someone is watching :-)

I have posted these before.

Here are the two MOBs under sail that I teach. Both involve heaving to as the final maneuver and picking up the MOB on leeward side. Plan to to the pick up at the shrouds. Aim to keep the MOB between the upper and lower shrouds.

Upwind (there is no sail adjustment, they are kept sheeted in)

Downwind (as you come about harden all sheets as best you can)

They work well on most monohull and some cats.

Under power I use either an Anderson turn
