Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Okay those that ask about the P3s in themselves they are old. I think they were called Electras and as a kid flying from Miami to Cleveland took over 4 hours. They probably are equipped with high tech gear but in themselves right there with Nina.

Yes, exactly. The P3 Orion was based on the Lockheed L-188 Electra airliner. It dates back to about 1961 if I recall.

Many boats sail now without HF radio if they have an Iridium phone so I think it is safe to say the only long range communications was the Iridium and the Spot.

Just wondered because some amateurs have portable HF rigs. I've got one that goes into a Pelican case and the antenna is a f/glass squid pole. Highly portable.

That doesn't appear to be the case here, but just thought it was worth running to ground.

Does anyone remember the story of the Rose Noelle trimaran back in 1989?

Its 4 crew survived almost 4 months in the upturned hull off New Zealand. It flipped on 4 June and the crew survived in a wet compartment the size of a double bed. They learned how to fish with crude equipment and survived until finally making landfall 119 days later.

If Nina is still afloat, then survival in wintry conditions is definitley possible.

Its not pleasant in the Tasman at the moment, Its been like that for over a month,

Hopefully they are holed up some where,

Or, if they are sailing in it, Its going to take quite a while to cross the Tasman in that weather,

I'm very sorry to say that the active searching for Nina has been abandoned by the NZRCC. We can only hope that more information will come to light or that the crew are safe and well and will make their own way home.

• THE search has been called off for the American schooner Nina which went missing with seven people on board in the Tasman Sea.

The 21m sailing vessel was travelling from Opua in the Bay of Islands to Newcastle in Australia on May 29 with six Americans and one British man aboard.
It struck winds up to 110km/h and 8m swells and has not been heard from since June 4.
Extensive searching over the past 11 days of an area more than eight times the size of New Zealand has failed to find any trace of the schooner.
No more searching is planned unless new information comes to light, Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand operations manager John Seward said on Friday.
But radio broadcasts will continue to be made in New Zealand and Australia in the search for new information, he said.
Those on the Nina are David Dyche III, 58, and wife, Rosemary, 60, their son David Dyche IV, 17, friend Evi Nemeth, 73, Kyle Jackson, 27, Danielle Wright, 18, and Briton Matthew Wootton, 35.
The vessel is equipped with a satellite phone, a tracking device and an emergency beacon that has not been activated.

Anything is possible I pray they make it. Its apparent they've lost there way or lost there vessel. Prayers sent!

I pray that the human spirit prevails here.

After reading all the posts i have learned that there is more i can do on my own boat to help in such a situation.
I will now add
1.a portable sat phone with a spare battery and solar charger.
2. Plb beacons with gps for everyone on board during ocean voyages.
3. Add a epirb with gps to the liferaft.
4. Handheld VHF
5. Full class b AIS stand alone to my raymarine system
6. Maybe a spot ?

It seems the inability to make contact in anyway between Nina and the search operations just makes things extremly difficult all round.

I really hope they pull through.

Hello my sailor friends. I hope you will allow me to call you friends.

As you are aware they have called off the search for the Schooner Nina. If Nina comes home it will be through other ships sighting her or under her own power.

I can not speak for the other families but this will be a very painful time for me to absorb and process this information.

Cruisers Forum has really helped in information gathering, emergency equipment types, general and specialized knowledge and just all around comfort, realism and love of the sea.

As we go through the coming weeks or months I will never forget your help to a total stranger and your compassion to help me.

If I can ask one favor... Please the next time you cross an ocean or the 7 seas leave a sealed envelope for emergencies. Satcom tel number and account info plus password if required. Any other info that can help to find you sooner.

That would be a good legacy for Schooner Nina to leave.
