That's ridiculously wrong to give the same probability they are from Nina as any other source maritime, or from land, flotsam or jetsam.

The chance they are from any one vessel is so extraordinarily low after 80 days at sea.

My belief is, with comments like that, the search operators are artificially inflating the chances of any successful search. And not just by a small margin, but a huge margin.

I do not read that line the same way you do, Mark. I believe they're trying to say what you say: that it is unlikely to be from Niña because it could be from any vessel.

I would leave the containers well alone unless someone can pick them up and try to identify. Oceans are full of floating garbage.

and I believe you can take the coordinates from this image and add to your own google earth and find exactly where they are placing it ...

Ok, that gives an indication - North of NZ.

The coordinates noted on Baird's Facebook image (linked below) are about 112 NM west of Norfolk Island and about 240 NM north of the estimated position on June 3rd (33S 165E). If all this true, they'd have been drifting north at about 1/2 knot on average.

The June 3rd position estimate is from a Friends of Nina's post (#754)...

By the way, Hud, 240 nms / 60 days, not 30.. June 4 to Aug 4 = .17knot.

Australia is facing a challenge with asylum seekers arriving by sea. As a signatory to the Refugee Convention Australia has obligations to asylum seekers however they arrive. Around 97% of arrivals to the Australian jurisdiction by sea are assessed as being entitled to refugee status.

Asylum seekers are NOT illegal arrivals.

Seems however that the majority currently are in fact economic refugees and Australia has a very good social security system for them.
