Yeah, Dan is right. They changed it about a year or so ago.
Saved me $20 per year

Mind you the $20 was worth it in that whenever I emailed them they would reply!!! You ever tried emailing Google?


Speaking seriously for a mere moment, I would love it if Google Earth could be integrated with enc charts... it does have to happen sometime, maybe 10 years time, but it will be glorious when we have everything all there on a nice big screen

I guess they figured that if they just slipstreamed it without telling anyone, they could still collect donut money from the users.

No kidding. I like using Nobeltec with the satellite photos either in a separate window, or overlaid on the charts. Be nice to do that for any area with a little more up to date photos.

I use Google Earth on my iPad (3G GPS), it is fantastic and free, the iPad GPS seems to be more accurate than my older hockey puck USB GPS and works when below. GE is really useful and portable on an iPad, just pinch the screen to zoom in or out, it's so easy, my 75 year old computer illiterate mother became a pro in 5 min.

Anyway, I didn't have to pay for GE to use it with the gps on an iPad.

I tried zooming on google earth then turning the net off and it works. The thing is it will take me hours to scan the whole coastline from Adelaide to Brisbane.

So I tried google map buddy but I cant get it to work right. It keeps not responding. Is this program supposed to be able to capture large areas, say all of Tasmania at the highest resolution possible?

I found another service, Google Satellite Maps Downloader. It does essentially the same thing as google maps buddy but is still being developed and actually works. It also includes a map viewer which unfortunately is unable to zoom out of the images you harvest. A resourceful person can obtain the software without paying but it really doesn't cost that much. I downloaded Bora Bora at it's highest image detail and ended up with a file that 3.5 gigabytes and 1.88 gigapixels, thats 1880 megapixels.

I haven't had luck with the automatic cachers so I have been doing it manually. But I can't find the cache files. The tutorials say it is in C:\users\YOUR user name\appData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth but my laptop with W7 does not have an appdata folder in the my user name folder! (dennis). Non does a search for dbCache.dat find anything

I do have C:\Programs Files\google\google earth but I am not sure if that is correct? Whats going on?

I have found my dat files. I had to "show hidden folders" which in it self is a mission when you are not used to W7. appdata is hidden.

To save them do I need both the index file and the dat file?

Why do I have:

dbCache.dat
dbCache.dat.index

And

dbCache1.dat
dbCache1.dat.index

The original ones are almost 1gb and the verison 1 are only a few hundred mb. What happens when I reach 2gb? Will it start overwriting and I will loose info?

At 2 gb it starts overwriting.

So you can test by copying the current file and see how you go shuffeling them about.

Its not absolutly easy, is it?

You could put a shortcut to the folder on your desktop so you can find it easily

In V5.2 of Google Earth there is a new file called: dbroot_cache that you evidently need as well as the dbCache.dat dbCache.dat.index. Which is unfortuante because all the caches I saved under V5.1 no longer work.

Doesn't seem to matter about those other two files with the "1" dbCache1.dat
