It says qtVLM can't write where it needs. Knowing nothing about what you actually did (but knowing it's "impossible" to lock up a Linux system doing normal stuff like building software), hard to help.
You should really be able to add that PPA, if not just doing what the wiki says, then at least after reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...y_Software_Tab using the clicky-clicky way.

Believe me Pavel, with me caressing the keys, anything will crash. Vista goes down once a week. I've only managed to down Linux three times. Each time by following installation instructions to the letter. This time maybe its because I sudo-ed gedit to get that deb line into sources.list. It is read only. Otherwise everything seemed to go well.

qtVlm is starting so I suppose most of it is there, it just vanishes, pretty much the same as google earth and opencpn vanish.

If you mean that other thread in OpenCPN forum, I asked about your graphics card as I know that Intel integrated chips and their drivers are in some not very clear combination problematic when it comes to OpenGL. I have no idea if it causes GE or qtVLM to "vanish" but I know that it causes the "vanishing" of OpenCPN while creating the OpenGL chart canvas and that's why there's the switch to disable OpenGL completely.

This message simply means that qtVlm does not have the right to write where you installed it. So just install it somewhere it's allowed or change the permissions of the directory containing qtVlm.

Thanks maitai. I don't remember asking for it to be installed in any specific place, I just followed the installation instructions. Where should it best be installed?

By the way Maitai the Ubunto Software Center program has the following message about qtVlm in its description.

Invalid unicode in description for 'qtVlm' ('utf8 codec can't decode byte 0xe9 in position 90: invalid continuation byte). Please report.

The program and its data is in file system/opt/qtVlm. The owner is set as root. How do I change the permissions?

The problem with the binary package is that a user don't have the rights to write to the /opt/qtVlm directory. This installation directory is built into the package. Hence the qtvlm.ini file and other user files, can't be created, leading to the error-message.
One solution to this is to move qtvlm.ini etc to $HOME/.qtvlm/

No, sadly. I was hoping to find a way to get the deb file to load into /home/qtVlm instead of into /opt/qtVlm, which is read only. See Cagney's message #310. Any suggestions?

qtvlm should be able to run from anywhere as long as you have the permission to write in the folder.

Can you list the content of /opt/qtVlm ? just the first level of file/foler

try doing this: cp -Rf /opt/qtVlm ~/
and then to change user permission: sudo chown richard:richard ~/qtVlm

finally you should be able to launch qtvlm doing: ~/qtVlm/qtVlm
