Dual Radars

We were recently anchored next to this Laurent Giles and I noticed these two radars.



I have seen multiple radars operating on large ships and I have relied on my own radar in the lands of rock and fog; however, beyond the back-up reserve of a second unit, I don't have an understanding of how two radars might be used for navigation.

Share your thoughts, please. I will continue with my single unit, but I am curious.

Close-in and far ranging monitoring. It depends on how much risk the skipper feels is acceptable. If one were using the new Simrad Halo, in combination with a 4G Broadband, situational awareness would be pretty high, and the electrical demand would be pretty low. But, that's a lot of paying attention to what's going on around you, in addition to sailing the boat, enjoying the view, and relaxing on deck. The English Channel is a bit more challenging than our waters off Southern California.

Ships usually have S-band (10cm) and X-band (3cm) radars. S-band is better for long range and seeing through weather. X-band has better definition near shore. Most radars for non-commercial vessels are X-band.

You most often see dual radar units on Power Pleasure vessels where electrical power isn't so limited. Peter on Tanglewood has written about choosing his radar units.

I think it has to do more with status than actual need, How many power boats do you see with Dual Sat TV antennas? Did you know most of the second antenna's are dummys?
