Re: Delorme In Reach Explorer

We have been using it for 2-3 years. Its great for communicating from outside the US for text and emails. You will want to pair it with another devices for a keyboard.

However, I find the weather service to be insufficient. Use ssb, or have a friend at home text/email you the forecast thru the delorme.

Agree we love ours, it's great for texts & emails. Pair with phone and we do the same getting additional weather on passages from friends and my sister. She does a great job, been a 100 ton capt since 18. The weather over in-Reach comes from Oceans, it is pretty accurate, just not enough details.

It's is an amazing device. A friend of mine took his single engine Trawler across the Atlantic, traveled around Europe, back across the Atlantic, and is now working his way toward Alaska.

I was able to follow him the whole way and exchange text messages with him when he was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Just to mention Delorme has been bought out by Garmin and now garmin is offering "their" version while honoring Delorme contracts going forward.

Used it last week on a passage. Paired with my phone for the keyboard. Excellent for tracking, backup GPS, and messaging. Didn't use the weather service.

Re: Delorme In Reach Explorer

We've had one for 4 years now and completely satisfied! Have never used the weather option so can't comment on that? It's nice how you can turn the service off for periods of time when not in use [ie. summer when back home] and not incur monthly fees! Hopefully Garmin sticks with this type of plan!?!?

The Admiral and I were just discussing whether this device would serve those trapped in Puerto Rico? Any reason it would not work in that situation?

Re: Delorme In Reach Explorer

bought one for a one time trip. It worked fine for my wife to track the progress of the trip and very short daily posts. No way near email but basically 'doing fine' that eased her mind. My wandering is done so it's for sale if you are interested. It's the uprated model. PM me if you are interested.

No reason at all as long as they can charge it via 12v

Denver, should work with no problems. Uses Iridium sats so as long as charged it has comms. No need for cell connection.

I have used one for the past 4 years
Great bit of kit
Weather by OCENS
Ok not great
nice feature is you can enter lat&long
for a different position then from where you
are, like 150nm down your route
Worked from the Baltic to the Med
and from New York to the BVI
No problem
Service from Delorme has been great
hope Garmin keeps it up
Cheers
Neil

Love it. No dead spots, at least in nth Pacific. Weather is truncated but adequate, if you have a reasonable understanding of weather in general. Text feature keeps the natives at home happy. Used since 2014.

Re: Delorme In Reach Explorer

👍Great product.

I have the "old" Delorme InReach Explorer...will probably upgrade to the new Garmin one (full GPS functionality).
