Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

The title says it all.

Post your typical anchoring depths in the Caribbean.

You could also post your deepest anchorage ever in the Caribbean.

This information would be helpful in choosing a rode.

Thanks

Re: Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

P.S.

I'd be especially interested in reports from peoiple who anchor out most/all of the time, since you presumably have to anchor in less desirable, deeper, spots.

Re: Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

We anchor in depths of 25' or less in the Virgins, using a 35lb delta and 3/8 all-chain setup, and anchor out almost all the time.

As a side note for your manual retrieval method on the other thread...we have been hooked "hard" only once, otherwise, haven't had a difficult time pulling up the whole lot by hand...makes for good exercise. I have had the admiral steering for me in 20kts, and was still able to retrieve by hand...just takes teamwork. Still...it's way better to have and use the windlass!

Re: Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

Depths here on both the Illinois and Mississippi rivers tend to run about 5 feet close to shore to 20 feet closer towards the channel. I do not think I have ever used more than 40 feet of rope here.

..... But enough about me, what state do you live in anyway?

Can't help you with Carib depths but as for rode - minimum of 50 metres (150') of chain plus 50 metres of line; better is all chain (100 metres or thereabouts).

Size of chain (and line) is boat size dependant.
Rode isn't really site dependant although if a lot of coral, then no line, all chain.

3-7metres...
I like to carry a minimum of 5xLOD of the boat in chain with 50metres of multi-plait as extra rode.
Tho' on delivery's I take what I get.. currently a Danforth with index finger thick all rope rode for a 64ft 29ton boat...

Re: Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

With the rebound in the U. S. economy the Caribbean seems more crowded the past 2 years & I find myself anchoring further out. 15 to 30+ feet. 150' 5/16 chain & 150' rode with a Rocna, which is most certainly the best anchor I have ever used.

Re: Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

Usually around 20 ft, but will anchor in up to about 40 ft. I would prefer to be further out in 30-35 feet than too close in where I have to worry about a charter boat dragging in a squall overnight.

Re: Typical Anchoring Depths in Caribbean

Anything from 2 to 20 meters.

We are one of the smallest boats so we will often be in the shallower spots. Far from optimum but that's what you get when you are small.
