I've got to think this over a day or two. The 37 is way too big for my 25ftr. I got it to trade away, then got to thinking about it as a hurricane anchor but wonder how I could ever set it well enough to be effective. It's big! I've tied into the mangroves in one hurricane but might not have that option next time. I'll be in Fl and the Keys. I think I would use a smaller Fortress as my main daily anchor as I've done ok with just reg Danforths in years past. Although many times I had to dig them in by hand.

Thoughts welcome.

The FX-37 is pretty big for a 25 foot boat, though the upside is it isn't real heavy. Space for storage would be more of a concern than the weight I would think. Of course to utilize the holding power of the FX-37 you need the rode as well and that might be size prohibitive. I used Fortress' recommended 3/4" nylon and I am not sure that would have gone through the deck pipe on our Coronado 25.

For our cruising I don't see a need to have a lunch hook and a storm anchor. I carry the FX-37 on the bow and that is good enough for either use. I need to have a second one on board for that just in case thing, but we don't stray so far away from things we couldn't find a place to tie up if we absolutely needed to.

I lived anchored out in the Keys for years. By far the best hurricane hole around is to make a b line for the Shark River in the Everglades. It is only a day away, and with 40' tall mangrove forest on both sides of a river that just winds for miles, it is as good as it gets. (Other than the bugs) If you do this, go early, to claim your spot.

You know what to do then...

A friend that owns a 55ft trawler had been dragging his Rocna every time he set it. As it was new he called the manufacturers, who asked if he was using a swivel and advised, if he was, to remove it. Having done this, he has not dragged it anymore.

For a while I used a CQR and dragged it all over SE Asia. Now I use a Bruce and sleep soundly. The problem sometimes is to make it break from a muddy bottom after a few days! Having said this, I don't do hurricanes or cold weather... I sail for pleasure.

I had a friend tell me that with an onshore breeze they (mosquitoes) came out over a mile to get em'. Heh.

Not sure if they were anchored in mud though.

We stayed there in April last year (too early for bad mosquitoes) in an offshore breeze. We quickly put up the mosquito cockpit enclosure but did not need it as they didn't know we were there.

We were in the mud but with just a nice breeze we could have had just rope and chain and probably not moved.

Man though, it is nice in FL to have that cockpit enclosure. No bugs and you get to use the whole cockpit.

Here is a pic of my Fortress. It appears to me to have the mud palms.

I don't see them on the diagram on the website under assembly. On the order page I don't see a pic of them seprately. It seems they come with 8 bolts and I see screws (bolts?) in the pic I have.

Do I have them?

Yes.
The Mud Palm is the Forked Plate bolted to the flat crown.

Nice meeting with you as well. From your picture, I can see that one of the Mud Palm plates are bolted on to the crown (center piece), and assuming that the same plate is bolted on to the other side, you are good to go!

Since the mud palms seem so important, and highly suggested, why are the anchors just not made that way? A bolt on solution can't be as good as one forged.

Is it merely storage, or are there times having the palms on the seafloor a bad idea?
