Building a Stern Rail Outboard Mount - Tips?

I need to make a mount for my Seagull 40+ on the back of my Catalina 27. Was going to use piece of lumbar with some stainless clamps to attach to the rails. The motor only weighs about 26 lbs.

I used two pieces of wood of appropriate size, and routed corresponding channels in both to match the top rail and a vertical support tube, right where it "Tees". Get the routing just right and the two pieces will fit snugly together over the SS tubing without any movement. Ease the external perimeters with a round-over bit. Join 'em with SS screws.

Or you can purchase what Hud describes at a worst Marine, or most chandleries in plastic......i2f

Buy one for $10 in plastic . I did works great.

if you do the split version as HUD suggest (or buy one) make sure your motor will fit over the thickness easily. My yamaha 15 barely, only if forced, fit over the total thickness on a purchased plastic version. It was the bane of my existance for a couple of years cruising! Frankly I wanted my homemade one like you suggested back! Another hint if you make or buy one: If possible get one as close to the thickness of your dingy transom as possible. Not matter how much you lubricate them, those outboard tightening screws seem to get hard to turn. so the less turning the better!
