Flummoxed for now, no pressure hot water?

Ok, ready to go on the maiden voyage. Spent last night on the 979 Tartan 37 I have spent an exorbitant amount on un repair. Found this am, no pressure hot water in the shower. Mighty cold up here in VA. Also, very low pressure in the galley of the same. Cold is ok. Had a quick run of the engine all was ok, and had hot water for a bit through that. You don't suppose that there is a shut of valve from the electric HW tank do you..? Never heard of that but don't quite get it. Pump is a 2.5 psi ITT.. would think that sufficient right? If anyone has had this happen I would love the help! I am just not familiar yet with this old girl to know all the systems!

Thanks!

Sounds like a kinked, or collapsed hose on the hot side. Try disconnecting at the outlet side of the water heater and checking flow. If good there, its down to bilge crawling looking for the kink. Cheap hose is prone to kink. Replaced all my h2o hose with pex.

Good thought ....will try it this afternoon. Do not relish the thought of pulling all the host to replace it! Truly from stern to bow on this job! Many thanks!

Re: Flummoxed for now, no pressure hot water?

A couple of thoughts on trouble shooting as the POs description of what is wrong is a bit vague. If when you turn on the facet you get a short burst of pressure and then it drops to a trickle that is an indication of a restriction in the line, kinked hose or some other. If the flow is always weak there is a pump problem. If the flow is good and no hot water just cold could be the heater element is bad. An easy check for this is to turn off the breaker to the hot water and then watch the panel volt meter and see if the voltage drops a bit when turning the the heater on. If the panel does not have a meter plug a VOM into and outlet and try the same thing. If no change in voltage the heater is not coming on for one reason or another. Let us know what you find and give more details about what you mean when you say "no hot water" The better the description of the problem the better we can help. Details, Details.

On a boat of this age many systems, and sometimes engines, have changed from the original. However, try asking on Page Title Lots of T37 knowledge is there, Bruce.

Do you have Grohe faucets ? I found that the water heater being made of aluminum had corroded inside and small bits of what looks like ground up coral was plugging the faucet valve cartridges . There may be other places in your hot water circuit they can collect and have the same effect.

Hot water tanks usually have a valve at the outlet which is at the bottom. Maybe this valve is only half open. You might not have opened it fully when you were reconnecting the hot water system.

My old boat with an aluminum tank had a chunk of what looked like lime clogging the dip tube, of course in my instance both hot and cold water were affected, but I would assume heating water would be even more likely to cause minerals to precipitate out of solution making a clog even more likely.

What helpful suggestions and a favorable outcome. Reminds me of 'Stump the Chumps' on Car Talk. Perhaps posters with the right answers could rack up points for swag or something....
