Veggies and Meat to/from Bahamas

Hi all:

I'm just wondering if there are any problems bringing fresh produce, dairy products, or meat to the Bahamas or back into the US? We have full freezers and plan to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies, assuming no problem with getting it into the Bahamas. But if we don't eat it all up, would there be any problems getting it back into the US?

Thanks!
Kathy

As noted, no.
List as "miscellaneous ship's stores/provisions".

Nobody cared what we had on board so long as you couldn't smoke it, shoot it, or snort it.

Cirtrus fruits, not the juices, but whole fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, etc. are not to be brought into Florida and will be confiscated if noticed. There is a citrus cancre and the Mediterranean Fruit Fly that can be devastating to the industry. The risk is low from the Bahamas, but it's best to not bring these back. Be among those who protect and monitor this yourself.

Checked in to Key West after three months in the Bahamas. Lady says we gotta go to the airport because the downtown office is busy with a cruise ship. She says, "Bring in all your meat and vegetables and fruits."

Pause. "ALL my meats, vegetables, and fruits? You want me to empty my freezer of ALL my meat, and bring it to the airport?"

"Well," lady says, "Do you have a lot of meat?"

"Yes, it is A LOT of meat," I replied.

"What kind of meat?"

"Well, we have some lobster tails that we bought at Man'O'War, and we got some ground beef, I guess, and some chicken...."

"Hmmmm. Do you have any pork?"

"Uh, no pork."

"OK, don't bring the meat. What about fruits and vegetables?"

"Dang, it's been quite a while since our last grocery store. I WISH we had some fruit. I guess we have some carrots left, and a tomato?"

"OK, you need to bring the carrots and the tomato when you check in."

Pause. "You want me to bring my carrots and tomato to the airport."

"Yes."

"OK, see you tomorrow!!"

So we took our CALIFORNIA-grown carrots, and our Abaco-grown tomato (a little the worse for wear) to the airport on the green bus. These items were promptly confiscated and placed in a federal freezer.

They told us to bring our trash in.

Re: Veggies and Meat to/from Bahamas

Interesting inconsistencies! I've checked in at the airport at Ft. Pierce several times since the increased Homeland Security changes, but I've never been asked to bring anything to the airport beyond my paperwork. Back in the nineties I would just call in and report my decal number. Back in the seventies I would have a customs agent survey my vessel and confiscate some fruits and plants. Who knows?

And somewhere, there is a file, with 27 8x10 color glossy photographs, with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one describing the offending carrots and lonely tomato. Maybe they will be filed in the same building that holds the text of the Alice's Restaurant Massacree with full orchestration and five part harmony.

But the real question, the only question is...... "KID, HAVE YOU REHABILITATED YOURSELF?"

Sorry, couldn't help it....... our tax dollars at work.

We were boarded in Beaufort, NC when we arrived from the Bahamas and they confiscated all of our meet, veg and fruit. Put it into hazardous waste labelled red bags. It seems like it is up to the whim of the guys checking you in.
