Just saw this mentioned on another forum. I just finished the Pardy biography and have read several of their books. It seems just a little sad somehow.

I heard a day or two ago that they were selling their boat.

Not so sure about the price tag on that one. Just higher than I would have expected.

Wow, 175K$ for an engineless, timber, starkly equipped cutter. While Talesin is doubtless a fine example of the shipwright's art, that seems a bit ambitious to me. Perhaps the Pardey mystique will fetch that price, but I wonder...

There is a mystique to the boat, whoever buys it will want it because it was owned by who it was owned by. Recently a guitar, (a not very good one), owned by one Robert Dylan, brought over a million dollars at auction. You could have bought a new one that was better for less than $800.

Also, if you are a person whose height is average, or slightly more than average, you are not going to be able to stand up in it. I am 5'11" or so and I couldn't.

They have also said that they won't sell it to just anyone, you have to be vetted to purchase it.

I think it will sell rather quickly, and for the price that they are asking.

Who's Robert Dylan? I know Robert Zimmerman and Bob Dylan but no Robert Dylan. It's hard to equate a sailboat to a guitar which can be shown or cars where there are collectors. Don't think there is a group of cruising boat collectors. How much did Hiscock's old boats go for?

I think they learnt from the first one and put an engine in this one.

Just met them yesterday at the Toronto boat show...they are doing seminars all week....they are legends in there field and it was just great to see them in person....They talked about there boat but never mentioned that it was for sale....I hope they get a bidding war on it and end up getting more than the asking price....

Yes, I also had the pleasure of meeting them yesterday in Toronto and enjoying their seminar. I'm not surprised they are selling their boat; the time has come, they have loved her and given us all much enjoyment and instruction.

I'm pretty sure Talisin has no motor, but they got a new, smaller boat last year, and I think that has an outboard. IIRC.

I hope they get a reasonable price for a small old enginless boat and that no one is ripped off by being stupid enough to buy a boat beacuse of the previous owners abilities.

Well, if you look at the linked ad, it says no engine, basically no electronics, one 40 amp-hr battery (!) and a reading light. Underwhelming to me.

Look, I think that Larry is a very good shipwright, and that they as a couple have done a lot of miles and written some good (if sometimes misleading IMO) books, but again in my opinion the boat is not worth that much as a boat. AS an icon... well, the BUC book on icons is not up to date so I dunno 'bout that!

And as to having to have your pedigree checked before they will sell to you... sheesh! But they have a lot of acolytes, and one may front up with their asking price. I assume that making a lower offer will mean that you don't pass muster as a viable buyer.

Despite my frequent disagreement with their ideas, they have contributed a great deal to the cruising world, and I wish them well in whatever they do in the future.

I'm sure Larry is an accomplished shipwright, but this boat has laid decks and plywood floor timbers. For 175k!

The name may sell the boat but without the name I don't think the boat would sell for 25% of the asking price.
