Police / Cruiser Drama in Australia

Someone in Brisbane has blown a fuse...

Quote:
An armed man at the centre of a 10-hour standoff at a Brisbane ferry hub is a New Zealander who fought in Vietnam and is probably making a cry for help, a friend and fellow "yachtie" says.
A 54-year-old man threatening self-harm has moored his boat at the normally busy Eagle Street pier.
The stand-off has paralysed the nearby riverside area and is set to disrupt afternoon peak-hour ferry services. from New Zealand had lived on his boat in Brisbane for two years and was close to the nomadic yachting community.

Brisbane standoff a cry for help: friend

I hope it works out for the guy.

It just gets worse for the poor bloke

A police officer said at the scene the man had requested a bacon and egg McMuffin.

Successive Australian govts have a lot to answer for on mental health!

ive seen first hand experience of how living a hermit life can make a bad situation worse. Ive never thought of it as being a lifestyle which needs an occasional vacation away from it to have a break but I guess if you spend too long in any situation, some peeps might need a change of scenery

Only Police guns

Quote:
the siege at Eagle Street pier ended after police stormed the vessel shortly after 9pm and arrested a New Zealand man.
Police stormed the yacht from a dinghy while firemen hosed the man who had threatened to blow up his boat and kept the city at bay for 16 hours.
The man had also threatened to set himself alight before police sprung into action.
Witnesses said shots were also fired, apparently rubber bullets, and the man fell into the river before he was led away in handcuffs

Its a very sad tale. I hope the guy gets the help he needs. I think it would be fair to say that the mentally ill all over the world need more resources than are currently available, not just in Australia.

I do have to giggle at the reporters work. The quotation marks around "yachtie" make me think of Dr. Evil in Austin Powers and I find it hilarious that the reporter took time to get an opinion on the subjects guitar playing ability. It would have been funnier if the friend had said " He's not a good guitar player, he just keeps playing 'Stairway to Heaven' over and over...

Its sad. Mental illness usually is.

Its sad that the QPS made it bigger than 10 bears when it didn't need to be.

There is some inaccuracy somewhere though - either he is older than 54 or he isnt a viet vet. The last NZ forces left Vietnam in 72 as did almost all of the Australia Army. A training team stayed on and a guard unit, they all left in 73. In 75 there was a short "humanitarian aid" effort to evacuate various US/NZ and US citizens from Saigon. The maths just dont make it.

Which isnt to say he didnt serve his country. Just the the media, as usual doesn't do basic verification of what it is told.

Simon's comment above is a bit rough, but probably fair.

If you read this version I feel it is touching that the man has support from his fellow “nomadic” yachtsmen without them having to make judgemental statements about mental illness.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/8190632/part-of-brisbane-cbd-shut-due-to-standoff/

So what if he did have some sort of crisis? It is likely to happen to most of us at one or another time in our lives.

Its the water in his tanks, I am sure. You need to have 3 stage carbon filters or the bajoobie bugs in Australia will get you.

Why do you think he is psycho? Maybe just pissed off?

Admit it - we all feel like that one day or another. I do, anyways.

I hope the guy will be helped and go cruising (or whatever it is he would like) next.

Whilst I think most of us feel that way, we don't act on it.

That's where I draw the line on my sanity!
