Canadian sailboat tried to sneak out Colombia with illegal inmigrants

A dumb Canadian captain, a sailboat and 29 illegal immigrants were intercepted by Colombian coast guard out Cartagena gulf.
No zarpe, no immigration papers... and a 4 month baby on board...
Bad day for the canadian guy... I think he's not gonna be able to sail in a long, long time.. specially because Colombian choose to charge him with human trafficking...

Took Canadian hospitality a little too far~

I don't speak Spanish, this Canuck only knows a little rusty French, so here:

29 POB?? Must have been a mite crowded below, and she might have been suspiciously low on her lines.

Not clear whether the skipper or the refugees were dumber... maybe a tie?

Re: Canadian sailboat tried to sneak out Colombia with illegal inmigrants

I admit I'm not very knowledgable on illegal immigration and human trafficking, but I don't understand the logistics of Cubans going to Panama via Ecuador, across the entire country of Colombia to Cartagena and over to Panama by boat on the Caribe side.

Wouldn't it be simpler to go to Panama on the Pacific side - possibly straight from Ecuador?

And how did Cubans get to Ecuador in the first place? And why do they want to be in Panama?

Wasn't he on this forum a little while ago looking for opinions on blue water boats capable of sleeping 30?
I'll go back through the threads and see if I can find it.

The smart Cubans ( doctors mainly) get a job in Venezuala.... then walk into Colombia and head straight for the US embassy... 900 or so last I heard....

Probably the same situation as on the Venezualan side.

I had Colombian crew last year... she was saying there are quite a few yachts carrying backpackers etc from Colombia to Panama so they can avoid the Darien Gap. Maybe these people are the 'etc'.

..yep, some sailboats head from Colon (Panama) to Cartagena (Colombia) and vice.. even me did that service bringing some backpackers during the sweet '90.. help with the dishes, gas and general services... but tried to sneak out Colombia from Cartagena.. with 29 people onboard.. it's not a good idea..
Specially because the Cartagena Navy base is quite big and important.. dumb guy!!

Heh Captain, u know how to bend over and kiss your arse goodbye? What a lovely boat he "had"....No matter what his agenda was...money, political, help the downtrodden type....he is not going to like prison...but latin countries prisons...where he is white, old, perceived to be rich by the clientale...this man has little chance or no chance unless the Canadian embassy can convince the Columbians to allow him prison time in solitare or in Canada. Nonetheless...life as he once knew it is over.
