Thoughts are with her and her family, would be tough for anyone regardless of age. Hopefully this story has a happy ending, scary to think help is 2 days away.

Life is short, enjoy it while you can live every moment as if it were your last.

Abby Sunderland Reported Missing

Here's the CBS news report: Teen Sailor Missing

From the news story:

In her last Internet posting from the Indian Ocean, she reported 60kt wind, and seas "still huge, and rolling the boat around like crazy."

Apparently she set of her beacon. I'm still reading…

There'll be plenty of time for armchair quarterbacks to tell us they knew it would turn out like this from the beginning, later. Let's all pipe-down, and let this thread bring information for a while.

Do you not have the civility to shut the hell up while the girl's survival is still uncertain?

I see nothing wrong with letting people speak their minds...as long as we are respectful with each other.

Many were predicting something like this would eventually happen long before it happened. Many people, including myself, feel awful about her situation as well as are justifiably ticked off at her parents.

I wish the best for her and perhaps less so for her parents. I hope the long term fame they so desired for themselves and for their daughter by putting her life at risk never pans out. Any acquired fame will only motivate parents with even younger children to do the same thing.

Timely edit David...

Scott, who is directly involved at MdR, has posted the following update on SA:

"Abby's EPIRB position has drifted 12 NM @ 64 degree true in 12 hours....They are still both together........Not really sure if both have built in GPS i think only one does.....but one of them is giving GPS position.

Third EPIRB with built in GPS has not been activated.....

Qantas Airbus 320 has taken off with spotters aboard and VHF radios they will be there in about 2-3 hours from now.

Sunrise in her location is 2:04 am UTC 7:34 pm PDT

They will make several low passes attempt to make VHF radio contact them climb to altitude to make a lot of noise.....they have maybe 2 or 3 hours loiter time....they burn a lot of fuel if not at altitude.

She would not activate EPIRB's for just lost comm's...There was a lost comm's plan..

This is direct information....."

She sets off - Sailing Anarchy Forums - Page 98

(Apologies for the link to another forum, but thought the direct information would be of interest to those following on CF only).

What kind of boat is she sailing? It looks fairly robust, and I hope she can hunker down until help arrives.

I think this is a good sign - I had worried that Abby had been separated from Wild Eyes, and activated her personal EPIRB as a result. To read from her team spokesman that the two transmitting EPIRBs are still in the same location is a very good sign, to me.

The worst of the weather that had been pounding her has begun to abate, apparently, and it's now sunrise where she is, so I'm hoping that she can make use of the visibility and improving conditions to attend to whatever difficulties she's experiencing. I'm not interested in condemning her parents or starting the argument again about whether a person her age should be doing what she's trying to do.

I have only sympathy for her family as they helplessly wait for some news of Abby. It's the not knowing that must be unbearable.

More from Scott in MdR, copied here just in the unlikely event a CF reader is anywhere near:

" I will just give you her first reported EPIRB position hit i got from USCG:

40.513s 74.457e

The position drifted 12 miles in the first 12 hours @ 64 degree true

Anybody in the neighborhood please go for it.

The position from Abby about one hour before was:

40.50s 74.40e"

She sets off - Sailing Anarchy Forums - Page 101

(Once again, apologies for the reference to another forum, but this is direct info which I think is worth sharing).

Also the link to the AMSA bulletin outlining the SAR event progress:

I have moved all the posts that are primarily focused on arguing the advisability of allowing a young sailor to do what Abby is trying to do to this thread:

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ate-42132.html

If you want to weigh in on that question, do it there, and please leave this thread available for news updates.

Thank you for your cooperation.

The closest navy ship was 2 1/2 days away and the closest fishing boat 40 hours away. Its stuch an empty ocean.

I hope they can get there and she's OK.
Hypothermia must be a major consideration waiting 40 hours.
