Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

I gutted both heads. In the forward head I installed Corian counter top and flooring and raised the toilet up on a pedestal. Electric freshwater head, above counter sink and stainless faucet. Just installed new macerator pump the last one lasted 7 years.
In the aft head I removed everything and installed Corian flooring and 1/2 wall,Formica from 1/2 way up to ceiling, and Sintra pvc panel with led lights for ceiling. Also bench and a cabinet for the water maker. It is now a huge shower stall which is excellent for live aboard or cruising as we found we never needed two toilets but being able to take a shower and move around while you are doing it is a real plus.

Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

Electrical System
When I purchased the boat it had the original electrical panel with a few DC breakers and AC breakers for the battery charger and 4 110 volt electrical outlets.
I removed the original panel and pulled out every single wire on the boat, relocated the house battery bank to the center of the vessel under the salon floor.
House bank now consists of 3 Lifeline AGM 8D batteries with 255 amp hours each
for a total of 765 AH of capacity, plus 2 series 27 batteries for the engine and generator starting. The extra weight of the batteries is offset by the generator astern. All the new wiring is done to ABYC standards and was done with Ancor Marine Wire. A whole lot of wire.
I had a custom panel made by Blue Seas Systems to my design and it includes a VSM Monitor which is a digital unit that measures AC/DC voltage, current and frequency, and Amps, and monitors the fuel and water tanks with ultrasonic senders. I set up the input to the boat to 2 30amp shore inlets with a 50amp splitter at the dock.

Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

The original galley had an ice box and an old Force 10 propane stove.
I ripped everything out including the countertops. The original ice box was huge so I saved the box and insulated it with multiple layers of foam cored insulation board with the highest R value I could get, with heavy plastic in-between layers for a vapour barrier. I finished the walls with custom cut stainless steel panels.
The fridge was big enough when I started that I could get in the box to do some of the work.
I used the same process to build a separate freezer under the galley forward counter that is 18" x 18" x 4 feet deep.
There is another Dometic CB 40 freezer built-in under the salon sofa, and a counter top ice maker in a custom pull out drawer in the cabinet next to the chart table.
I replaced the Formica counters with Corian and a custom stainless steel back splash cut with a CNC router to the contours of the wall. Also use stainless for the back splash and overhead behind the stove.
I bought a European counter top four burner propane stove top for a home and a separate stand alone oven underneath. Left of the stove is a built in microwave oven with a broiler element, and built in spice storage to the right.
I installed the largest stainless steel sink that would fit, under counter, and a stainless faucet.
The galley is really big for a 44' boat and the layout and design are excellent, one of the best I have seen.
Finally I constructed a custom full size tilt out stainless stainless steel garbage can that accepts a standard large kitchen bag It tilts out from under the end of the counter when you are cooking and tilts back in when your done.

Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

I renovated the chart table and added
Blue Seas Sysems DC electrical panel with digital readout for the house bank, and the main engine battery, and generator starting battery.. Has 3 way switch to toggle between each bank.
Satellite TV antenna control panel. The system has an 18 dome with the LNB for North America.
Navigation light control panel with indicators
Frigomar A/C digital control panel
110 volt outlet
Fusion head unit with DVD/CD/Radio
Fusion iPhone/Ipad input head
Standard Horizon VHF with AIS receiver and remote Command Mike at helm

I left room for a second VHF radio and a 2nd chart plotter slave unit to mirror the helm unit.
I installed a Simrad chart plotter with a separate gps antenna as a back up if the main plotters fail. This is working great.

Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

The standing rigging is 7 years old with some updates. It was inspected last year and everything was fine. The mast and boom and the rigging are down right now for hurricane season storage and I will inspect everything before it all goes back up at the end of season.
I have a brand new North Sails 135% Genoa that I just received and has never been used. The main sail is a North sails unit full batten with about 1 years use. Also a small storm sail.
Do not have any pictures of the aft or forward cabins right now but will take some more photos when I get back to working on the boat in the next week or so.
I have been very busy with the new boat for the last couple of months.

Everything looks and sounds great! You have done a load of work.

Do you have any photos of the deck and the areas of the interior that are unfinished or still waiting refit?

Cheers!

Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

No photos of the areas you requested right now. I had planned to take a complete set of pictures a couple of months ago before I put it up for sale but things went sideways with lockdown and everything. I will get back to the yard where I have her stored this week maybe and will take some additional pictures and post them here. I also have the boat listed with a friend who is a broker and he has it on Yacht World.
The interior is about 95% done it is just kind of a mess inside because I set up to do some work outside.
The new boat has been keeping me really busy as well.
Thanks for the interest.

What type of autopilot?

Average cruise speed you’re seeing on passage?

Can it run basic systems and autopilot on a passage and not be a net deficit power wise with solar?

That would be great to see, when you have a change to get those pictures.

I tried to find the boat on YachtWorld but I wasn’t able to locate it. Do you have a link you could share?

Re: 1982 Cheoy Lee 44' total refit

Average speed with good wind is 8 knts.
The boat does not have an auto pilot installed right now. No chart plotter at the helm either, I was waiting to install the last of the electronics until the refit was completed or they would probably be out of date. The boat has the three Simrad Is20 gauges in the cockpit, with wind speed, depth, water temp etc.
No solar installed, the house battery bank has 765 AH available and if you wanted to recharge the batteries you could start the engine or generator.
