After all qtVlm is a far better software than OpenCPN especially for users with Apple devices because it supports macOS as well as iOS. OpenCPN does not support iOS and so cannot be used for iPhones... |

I recommend the Dual XGPS160 especially made for Apple. It is feeding 5 devices simultaneously and offers GNSS as well as Glonass. |

Use qtVlm instead, it works for iOS and macOS. Even the macOS version of OpenCPN lacks of support for Apple devices. It will give a warning during installation. |

bdbcat will have less problems with OpenCPN for macOS when he switch to Qt from the actually wxWidgets. So he will even be able to produce a version for iOS (iPhone and iPad). |

Don't know the Bad Elf GPS but as far I can see it is for iOS operating system only and not for macOS. Your MacBook has the macOS operating system and only iPhones and iPads have the iOS operating... |
