Re: Best places around the world to buy a used sailboat?

Well, no. Experience is an excellent way to acquire the skills required, it's also an extremely popular way and I would guess probably the most common method. The lack of a formal sailing...

Re: Strange marks on Plywood after painting.

Looks to me like contamination or an incompatibility issue that has changed the surface tension of the paint in those areas.

Sand then filler, sand and repaint should fix it.

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

That's really the only thing that makes sense as the wind looked to be too light to cause such a sudden turn, although it was from the port quarter, also the hard to port order was given once the...

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

The AIS track data showed them in the centre of the channel on a straight heading with 2nm of channel ahead before the next turn and running at 8knt. They should have been able to coast along and...

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

To me it seemed like the smoke was from the backup generator coming online and immediately getting loaded up. The back-up generator was online for only about 60 seconds which was probably not long...

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

I'm sure they are using a variety of torches but the torch in the picture is an oxygen/fuel torch, has dual valves and twin hose. We mainly use exothermic for underwater demolition or specialist...

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

That's a reasonable assumption, even though the turn was quite pronounced, much more pronounced than would be expected for a ship of that size from prop walk.
The ship was running 3 generators...

Re: New AGM battery, any initial maintenance?

Nope, it will be just fine. As I'm sure your aware, AGM like to be fully charged periodically so if your boats not in constant use the 100w panel should handle the charging just fine.

Re: Best places around the world to buy a used sailboat?

OP never mentioned buying a cruising boat and keeping it in a foreign country. OP was asking about best locations to buy a cruising boat in the future.

"My plan is to build a dinghy to learn the...

Re: Best places around the world to buy a used sailboat?

It just won't be cruisers forum without someone killing the dream. It's like some were just born on their boat and can't accept people who start with a dream.

Re: Removing threaded exhaust from manifold

Of course it can, typically used for alloy superstructures on steel hulls. Not your typical welding process but a permanent bond none the less.

Re: Remove the alternator - crazy idea?

This is a great idea, people have so many problems with alternators that removing it entirely and fitting a generator sounds like such a good solution it amazes me how it hasn't been done before.

Re: Blister repair when are you done? What can be left as is?

Needs to be removed

I use a sander/buffer with sanding disk to rough down the high spots, this will also remove most of the remaining gelcoat too, your fairing compound will do the rest. Hold...

Re: Basic dual battery bank with DC-DC charge layout

There is no hard and fast rule and a lot depends on the current draw of your windlass, so on smaller boats running off the start battery with the engine on high idle is a good way to go providing you...
