Re: Old engines little used

My comment is that the sellers story sounds suss. The boat is 25 years old but the engines have only done about 50 hours?? 2 hours per year? Drop off 3 years on the hard and we go to 2.27 hours per...

Re: Tips for cleaning a diesel engine

A year or so ago I had cause to respray 2 x 400HP Cummins diesels in a commercial boat. Before I cleaned them, I brought a pile of old sheets from a recycling store for close to nothing. I lay a...

Re: New design performance catamarans are heavy - why is that?

Lots of discussion on this, but maybe the OP's question is answered if the new "performance" cats are just marketing lies and not performance cats at all?? What actually constitutes a "performance"...

Re: Bad vibration at > 1000 RPM in forward gear

All info can cause vibrations but I think SkipperPete may be more likely to resolve the problem. I presume all was good before or you would have told us. Your further tests have proven a few are ok....

Re: Longevity of the new 4 cycle outboards ?

PS I should have made clear those Mercs still performed like new at 1300 hours, so were well on their way to very high hours. My prediction would have been 4,000 to 5,000 hours.

Re: Longevity of the new 4 cycle outboards ?

I cannot give full experience but am a commercial user of 4 stroke outboards. I ran my last twin 4 stroke 115hp Mercs for 1300 hours faultlessly. Engines were flushed daily and gearbox and engine...

Re: Wit's end with my outboard

Not sure if anyone previously has made this point, but your sympton prompts me.
I had a perfect and near new Mercury 15 2 stroke outboard. Yours is near new and started as it should, so seems NOT...

Re: Please identify fuel filter on my YM 2MQ20

It does look like a CAV, which as stated used to be EXTREMELY popular on the British brands, but also as a bolt on aftermarket filter - like the Racor now is. If it is a CAV, the element part number...

Re: Surface Air Supply (Hookah) Systems

Wow! What a lot of mixed info in here.
I start by saying I have made my living by owning a reasonably sized (55 staff) compressed air engineering company which designed, built, specified,...

Re: Hangkai Chinese Engines - $225 New

I spent 10 years of my life trying to buy a successful product from China. I learned never to compare the Chinese with the Japanese. THe Japanese had pride and wanted to be like everyone else. The...

Re: Does anyone know of an upgraded alternator belt for a Perkins 4.154?

You have been given a huge list of possible causes of rapid belt wear - all very real. However, I will vote with rusted pulleys as well. I have had this problem three different times now and now know...

Re: Electric propulsion Repower Lagoon 560 Yanmar 110 4JH110

I like the concept as I am also into solar powering everything.......and not checking any of your calcs, but surely you are going to be using the generator nearly full time to power this? You have a...

Re: questions about anchor chain

One thing to watch out for is Chinese chain. I purchased a pail of new galvanised chain for my 65ft work boat after carefully measuring the old chain and getting the chandler to confirm the size. The...

Re: How best to calculate weight needed for a new mooring?

Try this company. They are in Northern NSW but advertise and exhibit on the Gold Coast so must work up your way. Their website is not so clear but they make screw pile moorings.

Segrass Moorings...

Re: Hydraulic Steering Pump replacement vs repair?

Hi Jimmy,
I have never rebuilt one of these myself, but as an engineer, don't think there is much I can't rebuild. After reading your horror story, I would return the new pump, on the basis it was...

Re: Red or Green? Sailors' Superstitions...

Yep, that's our "flatties". I guess their ease of catching is why they are now rare to catch and if you do, they were just born!

Angry Re: Red or Green? Sailors' Superstitions...

First thing to be noted - GPS's ARE NOT ALLOWED AND DEFEAT THE PURPOSE. When I did them, GPS's were new and only for the "rich guys". It was normally "newbies" who competed, to increase their...

I'll also back Lodesman's explanation. I had a funny banana story (elsewhere in this thread) so set out once to find out why bananas were so hated. Yep, they worked out way back in Captain Cooks days...

Re: Anyone can share experiences with a wet blasting kit for a Kärcher K2?

I have used the kits you describe on a small boat trailer to remove rust. I used a Karcher 520M - 120bar and 450l/h. I used garnet as I had some left over from a big job. It worked reasonably well...
