Re: Walkie Talkie's

Why not just go with a Standard Horizon VHF handheld and communicate through to the VHF on the nav station? I consider a waterproof handheld VHF an important piece of safety equipment on the dinghy....

Quelle horreur! A Frenchman who is a bad cook? How does such a person maintain citizenship?

Re: Best places around the world to buy a used sailboat?

I agree with the daysailer suggestion, perhaps a trailerable boat. I think it is a bit of a leap for you to go straight to a larger boat, especially if you intend to sail with your family. You must...

Re: Jost Van Dyke Customs Shakedown

I second boatman here. We used to go between USVI and BVI regularly. I read up on the rules and the decorum, and followed both to a T. Proper port, proper procedure, proper clothing. I entered with a...

Re: Dumb question - raising sails on a trailered boat

I keep my Catalina 22 on a trailer and have inspected the sails once or twice with her on the trailer. As denverdon and others have said, calm day is a must. A gust can ruin your whole afternoon. And...

Re: Simplicity: Yacht Owners Feared Dead After Escapees Recaptured (Grenada)

Great post - I hope it is read. I might amend your post to say that as visitors one is not twice, but thrice disadvantaged. The third would be that you must assume that the host country will err on...

Re: Simplicity: Yacht Owners Feared Dead After Escapees Recaptured (Grenada)

This post seems to be dichotomizing into people who ignore the problem and people who are "prepared" (which I believe from a number of your prior posts you mean to be a pretty aggressive defensive...

Re: Marinas using cameras for rules enforcement

Interesting point of view. Probably says more about one's general view of government than anything about cameras. Some people just hate government.
Personally, I am more concerned about corporate...

Re: 9 blade impeller versus 12 blade impeller

If the impeller is the plastic part that pushes the raw water through the pump, isn't the impellee the raw water?

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Re: Simplicity: Yacht Owners Feared Dead After Escapees Recaptured (Grenada)

Apologies that this is behind a paywall, but it is a nice New York Times piece on the event, the arrests, and most importantly, a nice tribute to the good nature of the couple.

Thanks for the thoughtful post. The fake macho BS of some members of CF is really hard to believe sometimes!

Re: Help 100 Live Aboard Sailors Keep Their Homes By Offering Feedback on Mooring Fie

The notion that the problem with liveaboards is primarily or even substantially about inadequate housing availability is sophistry.

Re: Help 100 Live Aboard Sailors Keep Their Homes By Offering Feedback on Mooring Fie

You beat me to it! Again, this is not mostly about desperate people who would be homeless absent their free ride in the harbor. It is a choice by people who want to live this way and work to shift...

Re: Performance of charter cats?

Ended up with a Bali Catspace for our charter. It was a dog. It was tough to point higher than 45 and tacking upwind was pretty tedious. It was just a year old so I don't think it was because the...

Re: Help 100 Live Aboard Sailors Keep Their Homes By Offering Feedback on Mooring Fie

Thanks to Joe for the info - although I would bet it is an underestimate, it does seem that sewage is not the biggest issue.
I would maintain my objection as noted by a couple other posters that...

Re: Help 100 Live Aboard Sailors Keep Their Homes By Offering Feedback on Mooring Fie

Thanks, Joe. I had the same question. Would sailing pug please provide us with a full survey of the long term 'residents' of this mooring field, as to how they dispose of the human waste that they...

Re: Simplicity: Yacht Owners Feared Dead After Escapees Recaptured (Grenada)

What I hope for is that these perps get a fair trial, convicted if they are guilty, and severely punished if they are convicted. That is justice and truth for me.

Re: Simplicity: Yacht Owners Feared Dead After Escapees Recaptured (Grenada)

Well, I didn't think it needed to be said, but apparently it does. "vigilante justice" is an oxymoron. It is not justice. It is retribution. Old Testament or Sharia "law". There is no reason...

Re: Bareboat back and forth BVI to USVI

To stick to the point and ignore the political nonsense, this has got to be the single worst piece of advice I have seen to date on CF. If your charter contract says that you are not permitted to...

Re: Bareboat back and forth BVI to USVI

Hi All
Update on this thread. I just got an email today that Dream is taking requests for folks who want to charter out of USVI and cruise both USVI & BVI. They don't specify what the basis is for...

Re: The cost of moorings

If the bulk of the cost is getting the contractors and rig up there, then the second one would be much less than AUD$20K. Could you install two for maybe $22K and rent one out to make it a business...

Re: Dinghy tow lines, best products, type of line, etc.

Hey Gord
Thanks for the info. A little surprised that the dinghy bridle is an open loop. I would worry that would be subject to sawing action that would chafe the bowline loop on the tow line.

Re: Dragging anchor issue documented in YouTube video

It happens everywhere. CF is mostly populated by thoughtful, humble people trying to help. But there are a few who are as bad as the YouTubers in dispensing advice. My favorite are the "Run Away!"...
