Re: Rum

The Venezuelan rums are excellent .Pampero, Cacique, Sta Theresa. Extremely cheap in country, no longer available for export. Pity.

Ya beat me to it. We toured the distillery in the DR and brought a couple of bottles back. It was the first rum I found I liked to sip. Not sure how it compares to others mentioned here but anxious to try them and see if Brugal holds it's own!

There are indeed bad rums too.

Decades ago I used to think Belizean One Barrel was not bad. Now I cant drink the stuff. Even a mixed drink w one shot in it gives me a headache. Tastes like molasses water with alcohol added to it.

Also have been unsuccessful in developing a taste for Panamanian Abuelo. There are just much better rums available here in Panama at the same price point.

I wonder what y'all would drink in someplace like Oaxaca for eample?
The Cactus is far superior to grass for nuance.

Re: Rum

BelizeSailor, can you name a few Panama rums that are better than the Abuela at the same price point. I am in Panama for four more weeks, and would like to try another rum as my daily pour. I have not tried the Abuela 7 year or 12 year. I'm paying 11 USD for a 750 mL bottle of the regular Abuelo.

Not Panamanian rums, but rums available in Panama like Flor de Caña and Ron Botran products. They are available at about the same prices as in their home countries (Nicaragua and Guatemala).

As a result, Ive yet to try the older Abuelo rums either, because I can get known good rums at similar price points.

Really need to order some older Abuelo shots in a bar. Maybe also Carta Vieja (another Panama Rum).

Re: Rum

Might try the Botran then, or just move up to the 7 yr Abuelo. I've previously posted on my aversion to Flor de Cana.

Many Botron rums are available in Panamá at about the same price as in Guatemala. The 5 to 12 year are good mixing rums. Centenario (23 year) is a true sipping rum.

Just took a stroll down the booze isle in the local Romeros (super market). Standard Abuelo was $8.19/750ml. From that price point up to $20 you could get imported rums by Botran, Bacardi, Flor de Caña, Medellin, Havana Club, and a few others. Also several Panamanian rums in that price range, like Carta Vieja, but I havent tried them.

So, lots of options here in Panamá. If you are in Panama City, probably even more.

A new local liquor store just opened up. He gave me a sample of Panama Red (a rare rum here Panama). Im going to suggest to him he continue with this trend by hosting a rums (and beers) of Panama night with samples of all Panamanian rums. Fine promotional idea I think. 😎

There are some fine tequilas too, but rum is more common on cruising routes due to the sugar cane industry locations.

Patron for me please!

There is a cool bar in Antigua, Guatemala called the "No Se Cafe" (great name too). They serve a house specialty there called "Ilegal Mescal". Apparently it got its name from originally being smuggled into the country, now I think they import it.

Anyone in Bermuda, please pick up a case for me. It's my current favourite. It's a little pricey here at $33

Re: Rum

I haven't scanned the thread again, so this may have been mentioned before. I just spent 7 days on Antigua, and drank a fair number of different rums. By far my favorite, and an almost-equal to the complexity of the Ron Zacapa 23 Solera, was Mt. Gay XO. It was a fine sipping rum.
