New Mount Gay Bottle

I find it ironic that Mt Gay which markets toward the sailing crowd has come up with a new bottle design that is unboat friendly. It's narrow on the bottom so it tips over easily and it's too tall for boat liquor cabinets. You would have thought they would have consulted some sailers before the redesign.

I don't know what size bottle you are buying, but the "fifth" and one liter bottles have gone from glass to plastic. I often leave a partial bottle on the boat (I know, hard to believe) when I go home and I don't expect it to keep as well. And the screw caps are so flimsy the threads strip right away.

Re: New Mount Gay Bottle

Mt Gay is the best rum you can come up with????

It is pretty much swill in those parts of the Caribe that make good rum.

And the good rum bottles are still boater friendly.

I happen to like Mount Gay, and Pussers is good, too. Of course, I don't drink it neat, I make a wonderful punch drink with fruit juices and coconut milk.

What is your preference in rum?

I'm more of a gin guy, but do enjoy a good sipping rum. Recently, we found Plantation to be an excellent sipping rum: Plantation XO Barbados 20th Anniversary Rum - Master of Malt

They make the rum in various Caribe nations (each has its own uniqueness) inside bourbon barrels, then return it to France, where it is aged in old Cognac barrels before bottling.

The Western Caribe seems to have some very nice rums. Guatemala and Honduras rums are excellent. The Eastern Caribe rums are over-rated in comparison.

The typical mass-produced rums like Mt Gay, etc should be masked with fruit punches - which is how most are served.

Try a good rum neat - you will be surprised how complex and enjoyable they are.

Just left Barbados with 4 cases and they were all bottles! Tall and oval. Fit our cabinet fine although disappears very quickly!

Cheers!

Never mind the taste... what are their hats like?

A friend from the Caribbean got my Dad onto sipping a good rum neat. He was impressed.

Good God man, what do you strap them to the rail like your water and fuel jugs?

I'm heading out for a little 10 day jaunt. Thought I would fill up my hip flask and bring it along. Think that will do for 10 days?
