I'm more of a gin guy, but do enjoy a good sipping rum. Recently, we found Plantation to be an excellent sipping rum: Plantation XO Barbados 20th Anniversary Rum - Master of Malt
They make the rum in various Caribe nations (each has its own uniqueness) inside bourbon barrels, then return it to France
, where it is aged in old Cognac barrels before bottling.
The Western Caribe seems to have some very nice rums. Guatemala
rums are excellent. The Eastern Caribe rums are over-rated in comparison.
The typical mass-produced rums like Mt Gay, etc should be masked with fruit punches - which is how most are served.
Try a good rum neat - you will be surprised how complex and enjoyable they are.
