Do you take the labels off your cans?

Hi ya
Where in the Philippines, high humidity boat not perfectly dry, cans, labels deteriorate, for longer term storage we give the cans a wrap or 3 of clingfilm.

A better question is why you need to have that many cans on the boat in the first place? I doubt we had more than half a dozen on board for our 6 month trip last year.

I would suggest that you NOT eat canned food without making sure that the cans are BPA free...

When crossing oceans your fresh food runs out in a week or 1O days. Without canned food your food choices start to get very slim. Sometimes its hard to get exactly what you want so when you are some where that you can restock you do.

No. My cans are stored in a dry place and I've never had a problem with the labels.

I used to take the labels off of my cans, mark them with a grease pencil of date and contents, and varnish them. I also liked to code them so no one else would know the contents and it would piss them off. e.g. x = peas. z = tuna fish.



For eggs, fresh only from the farmer. Never refridged. Vaseline and rotate every other day. The important thing is to keep the air out and the inside moist.

For veggies and fruits, a rinse and a bleach dip.

Now I just order out.

We bought a 60 day supply of canned goods yesterday for our Keys trip. WalMart sells plastic coated wire baskets that I used in the under seat compartments. My refrigerator drains into the bilge so when heeled over the compartments get a little water in them.

You do realize of course that there are food stores in the Keys, including several WalMarts. The Keys may be the Conch Republic but 3rd world? Nah...

Lol. If I remove the labels from all the cans before setting out, when I get to the destination where can I get replacement labels to put back on the cans? And what is the best glue to use?😉😉

I can assure you that home eggs are much different than store bought. Probably due to the feed, chemicals and lack of exercisse I suppose. I get eggs from friends that have their own chickens, and have had chickens myself in the past also. They just graze for much of their food. The yolks from home chickens consistently are much darker yellow , and stand up in the pan higher rather than flattening out.

LoL. This trip to the keys is a test run. Next fall we're headed to the Bahamas and only want to dingy in for fresh meat and vegetables.
