Europe is espresso heavy, but the US isn't at all. Outside of a coffee shop, espresso setups are rare here.

Personally, at home I alternate between a Chemex and an Aeropress. On the boat, we just use a single cup drip machine, although I've been looking at better quality options lately.

A Great boat option for espresso is flair. I've been using one for almost 2 years. It makes a great shot, the only problem is it only makes one at a time

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

I hand-grind my beans before brewing, this plus using good quality beans makes more of a difference to coffee taste than the brewing method. I've recently switched from an Aeropress to a Hario V60. This takes a bit more work to make a repeatable good brew but is easy to do aboard.

I'm giving an Aeropress and a hand grinder a trial. I've liked the Oxo pour-over, but I'm concerned about how well it would work on a boat.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

I switched from a cheap Hario hand-grinder to a wonderfully engineered (but pricey) Comandante Grinder and the difference was incredible. Not only was grinding beans no longer an aerobic exercise, but the grind consistency is close to or better than some commercial electric models.

The aeropress is a bit of a hassle aboard, mainly because I like the "inverted" method which is unstable even on a kitchen counter on terra firma. But the Hario V60 goes into the sink and makes a great and fast brew. 400ml of coffee (24g of beans at medium fine grind) takes only about 3 minutes; not taking boiling the water into account. The Italian Mokka-pots take longer and use a lot more energy to heat.

When I saw these in use in Japan, I think they put the coffee in before heating, like a peculator.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

Some of the tastiest coffee I have ever drunk was made by boiling in a saucepan which had been buttered. Let the grounds settle and pour carefully.

Being from a country not ever having been deprived of tea by the excesses of a bunch of Boston vandals i drink both hot tea with milk and sugar and coffee, both of which I make in a french press, it uses far less tea leaf to make it that way and strains them all out (The use of tea bags to make tea is an abhorrent practice only indulged in by complete philistines)
