Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

And by the way, to address the issue identified by the title of the thread.

There's absolutely no stupid way to make a cup of coffee when you're really tongueing for one first thing in the morning, it's a desperate matter of whatever it takes.

I usually make it right after I just after a few CN sights , just after I switch off all GNSS receivers aboard , and find I’m “ lost again. “ that’s just after another lithium rewiring project and my gender education classes

Even simpler -- leave out the paper towel and rubber band and just do it right in the cup. One of our standard methods.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

The siphon is an immersion brew, much like an inverted Aeropress, French press, or a large pour over that drains slowly and is filled with lots of water all at once. The flavor will generally be a little different than a pour over where water isn't just sitting in contact with the grounds and is only flowing through them briefly.

I've seen them at a handful of coffee shops locally, usually the nicer, more hipster-type ones. The one across the street from our home marina offers them, for example.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

While on the general subject of coffee: a scale is important to make repeatably good coffee regardless of brew method. Weigh the beans and weigh the water. I have a great little Hario scale that is designed for coffee making, it is accurate and has a timer.

What the designers didn't plan on was that the scale was going to be used on a boat that rocks at anchor. When I turn it on or try to tare it, I get a "unst" (for "unstable") and cannot get it to zero. My anchorage today is rather rolly so I haven't been able to get a single good reading and just had to wing it. So a mechanical scale is on my list of things to buy!

Or you could simply train your palate to be less picky...

Have you tried to tare with nothing on it? If you know the weight of the container for water or beans, you can put it on the scale after a tare and just do the math?

(Or, maybe it doesn't tare even without anything on it)

Ever try to weigh anything in a swell? You won't even be able to weigh your own body and get a consistent reading. Doesn't matter what kind of scale, inertia and momentum will affect measurable force on the scale.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

seriously ??....you wanna have dat thang on your boat ??

I like a nice cup of coffee as much the next guy, but I would not make room for that device on any boat I owned...

I'd go with Boatman's version...

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

After a rather bad burn when the inverted Aeropress separated, pouring boiling water/grounds onto and cooking Handsome Husband’s hand, the safer replacement is the Bobble Presse. So far so good.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

The key to be able to keep things standing up in a tolling boat is a tray on the unlocked gimballing stove.

May as well take a spoon full of grounds and a swig of hot water and swish it about in your mouth.

Chew well and then floss to get the remaining grounds out of your teeth.

Yeah, do instant sometimes. Not great, not horrible.

But when you find yourself without a coffee maker and only ground coffee...a paper towel over the cup works pretty well for brewing a cup.

Re: An Apparently Stupid Way to Make Coffee

pfffttt...if you have a generator....ahem, like me....use an electric coffee percolator...make as much....or as little as you want...blend different coffee's, etc..

come with me and live on the wild side
