There's plenty of room in the Med for sailboats to pass many boat lengths apart as compared to how close racers usually are to each other.

In photo, I am trying to get in position to steal this guys wind (the leader) and make a pass.

I had just headed up a bit as he went lower....when photo was taken

Oh sure there’s plenty of room , but someone’s needs to point this out to the dozens this year that were give way but crossed my bow , 6 metres away !!!

The overall view is seemingly , I can “ slip “ by , why are you shouting at me.

There's no need to shout if you know the rules.......

True merely pointing out that the poster suggesting ¼ mile is having a laugh , here passing by a boat length is considered stacks of sea room

A common sight here is a burdened yacht , bearing down on you refusing to slightly alter course , happily content to slide by a boat length away. It used to annoy me, now I leave the AP on and finish applying the suntan lotion

The give way vessel will most likely have the Italian ensign and it will be July or August.

The other is overtaking 6 metres to one side , When there’s about 4 nm of sea room

Ah fun and games in the sun

Which boat are you Thomm?, because if you're the one with the green and white sail you'd better have a lot of speed on, because it looks to me that he's about to lee bow you (the turbulence off his sails will disturb your air, it's known as, "We can't live here.")

Maybe the photo distorts the distance between you.

If you're the blue sail, then you're golden.

thomm, you do realize that perhaps your 10+ knot boats may not necessarily be applicable to all us knuckledraggers in monohulls, right?

The speeds might be different but the situations he describes or shows are applicable whenever two similar boats compete. I too have a knuckledragger monohull and I can totally relate.

Re: WE'RE RACING!!!!!!

The issue being debated isn’t two racers passing , it’s a racer and a non racer.

The outcomes are simple , non racers should , assuming sea room , afford racers the courtesy of not deliberately impeding their race. Racers on the other hand should not attempt to crowd non racers not attempt to assert race rules on them.

It’s simple folks

I'm behind. Black and white spinnaker

This race was in 2002 I think so I don't remember what happened. ( I think though photo was taken from the committee boat as we crossed the line so I may have been 2nd or 3rd)

That guy was a better racer than I was as I didn't start sailing until I was 37 but every now and then I could beat the better sailors.

The competition was tough though after I moved to Pensacola which is where that photo was taken and this one.

This one during Nationals in 2004 Pensacola Bay winds 18-21 knots. There were several delays due to too much wind.

Black spin photo during Nationals also and I have just come down on both hulls after crossing the line,

I did pitchpole several times on this big wind day. I had extra rake in the mast also that day and tighter prebend

We raced all week.

I actually like the lighter winds though when racing/sailing a boat with a spinnaker single handed. 2nd photo on a lake in South Carolina

Re: WE'RE RACING!!!!!!

The unwritten rule in Colregs is THOU SHALT NOT COLLIDE. Even the priviledged stand on vessel is required to avoid a collision, racing or not.

When in doubt, avoid!

Uh no! It is simple - everyone follow the Colregs.

Indeed , clearly different groups, nationalities and experience levels clearly have widely different interpretations of what might contribute to a collision , assuming they know the COLREGS in the first place. Certainly many it seems feel “ slipping “ by within a boat length is “ avoiding collisions “, technically it’s correct but somewhat disconcerting at times.

I've always hated the use of 'privileged' and 'burdened' when describing the rules. How is the stand-on vessel "privileged"? I would say the stand-on vessel has more of a burden than the give-way vessel.

Re: WE'RE RACING!!!!!!

My understanding is colreg only kicks in from sundown to sunrise. Yacht racing rules apply to yachts racing. It doesn’t matter the other boat is not racing. Racing yachts have to give way to many commercial vessels, barges etc. and even sailing dinghys. infringing the rules will mean disqualification. You can protest but you have to find which race the yacht is in. You can hail ‘protest’ which should get their attention. Port and starboard is a clear infringement from which there is no defence.
