I've read somehwere there is a psycology behind it... but of course I can't find an internet link ebcoase the keywords are too well used on Google..
But the thing is something like the crew see themselves in danger and think its an easy step into the safety of a life raft. Its an 'easy' step for some weird reason... they perhaps think all the bad bits wil go away once in the life raft.

If someone could find something written on it I would be very appreciative

I think that the story goes a long way to explaining how sailors throughout history have told tales of coming upon deserted, fully stocked, vessels sailing along with no crew or signs of life aboard. No boiling. Just leave it in a bucket or saucepan for a few hould and the chlorine will evaporate off. Obviously not if you put in as much as a swiming pool (which is cleated or non-cleated? so it doesnt evaporate)

So in an emergency don't pump it over the side!

Keep it exposed to air, slosh it around and see if its drinkable later

Yeah I don't want to bash on the guy; I could write a list of stupid things I've done, and I bet the the list will keep growing till I'm dead and gone.

These were the things that I saw:

- too much engine reliance
- 22 knots isn't a lot of wind
- the guy was talking about wind speed in mph; who does that?
- did i miss the part where he reefed?
- heave to and wait it out?
- one guy on a boat that's too big for him to manage properly
- if you're not able to safely operate your vessel, focus on getting that under control. safety first, course and destination a far second.

That's what we did when I grew plants indoors. The water from the tap has chlorine, which is bad for the soil. So we'd put it in a pan or bottle and let it sit out for a day. Didn't have the chlorine smell after that.

It is partly because chlorine dissipates from the water that it is rarely used to treat municipal water supplies these days. True chlorine (such as in bleach) should indeed dissipate if left exposed to the air. Municipal water supplies are normally treated with Chloramine these days, which cannot be removed from the water nearly as easily.

Chlorine is still a very common municipal drinking water disinfectant, but Chloramine is seeing increasing use.
Chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, is a more stable and persistent (but less reactive) disinfectant, and helps to reduce disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs) in the treated water. Chloramine doesn't affect the taste & smell of treated water, as Chlorine does.
Chlorine kills bacteria more quickly, so Chloramine requires more contact time to be as effective.
