circumvent the med - CHEAP harbors available?

Hi Folks,

I am thinking about buying a boat in italy and sailing it around spain to the north sea. but not in one cruise, but within the whole year 2020.
thus, for the "stops" it need harbor moorings. as prices are mostly ridiculous in the med - are here some people with knowledge about economical alternatives - we dont need anything else than a safe mooring. than we sail on.

regards
ralph

Re: circumvent the med - CHEAP harbors available?

cool app for holiday cruising and for comparing boat/size/costs! thanks!

I am still looking for the CHEAP solution - not fair priced yacht harbors, but dirty and rusty industry locations which cost "nothing".

Do they exit?

- one or two would be a good help allready enough for the "long" sail breaks.

The You tube channel "Sailing Kittywake" have sailed the other way from UK to Italy on a tiny budget seeking cheap locations to stop. Would be worth going through their videos with paper and pencil noting were they stopped.

Re: circumvent the med - CHEAP harbors available?

Hi. If you are going that way then Port d'Alcudia in the far north of Mallorca (Balearic Islands) is worth a look. Its a commercial harbour also with a large (& not cheap) marina called Alcudiamar. But boats often anchor quite long term just outside the marina, immediately SW of the boatyard. You can see them on Google Earth if you look. You will need a dinghy of course.
You will also see boats moored in the next bay north, off Port de Pollensa, but be aware it can get very windy & gusty there due to the mountains. Off Port d'Alcudia is very much less prone to strong winds - although they do occur.

Re: circumvent the med - CHEAP harbors available?

I was suggesting Alcudia as a cheap (free as far as I know) anchorage for a week or two in season as a stop. I was based in the marina there for 10 years.
On reading your post again, I wouldnt suggest actually leaving the boat unattended there while flying home. I have seen that done there, but I have also seen a boat or two washed up on the beach...& of course there is no security at anchor.

A very good anchor and a good rode.

Along the way you will sail there are a lot of well protected and safe bays.

Sure. I bet when return from home after 3 month there will be two boats hanging onto my anchor...

pirate Re: circumvent the med - CHEAP harbors available?

Which Italian coast..???
Theres plenty of anchorages along Minorca though they do get crowded in summer.
Mallorca theres Pollensa with good holding, next door is Alcudia but anchor in daylight when you can spot the sandy areas amongst the weed which is dense..
On the other side of the island is Soller, nice place.
Ibiza has quite a few anchorages along the West coast including San Antonio.. then on to Formentera where one can anchor outside the marina/port entrance, can get rolly with the ferries though.
Across to Denia one can anchor in the lee of the point most times bar bad weather.. used to be one could anchor in Torrevieja but not stopped there in a while and things change.
Another anchorage is just before Cabo de Gato, a holiday village and marina have sprung up since I first anchored there, it was a wild and lovely spot back in 96..
Round the Cabo and across the bay one can anchor outside the marina at Almerimar.. things get a bit sparse after that except fine weather anchoring but its only 34hrs or so to Gib where one can anchor off the beach to the West of the marina at La Linea, good holding just watch for aircraft as you cross the bottom of the runway.
After the Straits theres the Bay of Cadiz with good holding in sand at the Southern end or outside the marina at Porto Sherry..
From there I usually head straight for Faro/Olhau where in the lagoon I either anchor of Isla Culatra or if there is space opposite the fish market at Olhau.. after that its Portimao East of the breakwater entrance, Alvor up near the town, not big..
Then there are a couple of good spots by Sagres before rounding St Vincente, then nothing till Setubal, next is Cascais outside the marina and opposite the beach.
Peniche one can anchor to starboard of the entrance but the bottom has a bit of junk down there..
Aviero if weather permits an entry but watch your draft.. Porto one can anchor outside the channel in the river, once again watch your depths as it dries a lot in springs, and check your charts cause theres areas of rock.
Next stop is Baiona,, N Spain.. good anchorage

I suggest you join the UK based cruising association. You will earn your membership back in several ways:
An outstanding app for you with details of anchorages and ports.
Marina discounts.
Excellent advice on their forums.
The real deal is the info in the app!

Re: circumvent the med - CHEAP harbors available?

Hi Ralph. As someone else has already written, it’s important to avoid the summer months when all prices shoot up.

Dirty industrial harbors where you leave a yacht with any degree of safety are almost non-existant. Believe me, I tried.

But here are a few reasonably priced locations.

Italia. La Spezia, Assonautico Nautico Di

Sicily. Acitrezza in the fishing boat harbor

France. Cannes Vieux Port

Spain. Cartagena port

Spain. Fornells,

Spain. La Linea (near Gibraltar)

Spain. Ceuta (Morrocan coast, also cheap diesel!)

Portugal. Alcoutim, 20 miles up the river Guadiana

I live in Rota 11520 Cadiz, Spain. We have a nice port, and over in El Puerto De Santa Maria, there is Puerto Sherry, a Huge facility with full services. Then 14 Kilometers from Rota there is Chipiona, another excellent port, and a few Kilometers on there is at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River the Beautiful and Historic Town of Sanlucar de Barrameda with boocu anchorage in the river, and also a Port. Any one of the above-mentioned ports place you in Beautiful and Very Friendly Andalucia where Tapa Hopping and beautiful weather 85% of the time. Don't miss it. Senior Chief USA Retired
