Catamaran rounding up

Hi
Took our new to us Seawind 1200 catamaran for our first sailing today.
Wind was 18-20 TWS. We were sailing with 1 reef in the main and full headsail.
When on a reach the boat kept trying to round up. Had to steer down wind a fair bit to maintain a straight course. I’m not sure why?
Any ideas? We are new to sailing catamarans
There was no swell just small wind chop.
Thank in advance.

I know this is off topic, but how could you pass up the opportunity to put one more "C" in your username?

Re: Catamaran rounding up

Hi C six, we have a Lagoon 440 and have not really had an experience of rounding up yet. I would surmise that while you had a reef in the main you should still be utilising the traveller to depower the main. Like all new boats, new or second hand it takes a while to work out each boats sailing characteristics. 18 to 20 knots sounds like you had the right set up but as stated you may not have had the traveller set to suit the conditions.

Hi

Could also be something like mast rake, too much fullness in the main ( tighten the clew outhaul), sail battens in too hard or simply oversheeting. It took us a couple of years to learn how to sail our first cat.

Sounds like unbalanced sails.

Re: Catamaran rounding up

When this happens on my fractional rig cat I take another reef and push down some more dagger board. Dropping the traveler also helps. And then the boat accelerates away.

Are you on Facebook? If so, there is a group specifically for Seawind owners only. You will need to get approved to join, but there are a lot of Aussie-based owners, and represented by the full range of models. Also monitored by factory personnel. I suspect you could get an answer more specific to your boat.

Re: Catamaran rounding up

My first thought much like the others. Let down traveler, flatten sail, maybe let out some sheet. Maybe even put in another reef. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve put in a reef, thinking I might be a little early, finding we lose 1/4 kn or none at all, but have much improved steering, control and comfort.

There is member on this site that goes by the tag of Factor. He has a lot of experience with Seawind catamarans. Perhaps Factor my chime in or change your title to Seawind rounding up to get his and other seawind owners attention
