How do you know it's set, if you didn't back down?

Working the anchor into the seabed so that it really is set, and so that you KNOW it's set, is pretty much Chapter 1, Page 1, of Anchoring 101. There is no more basic anchoring technique than this.

I' know it's set because I set it! Same way as I have been doing since age 17.

Storm just passed over gusts over 35 to 40 knots

How did you "set" it? I doubt you will find a single soul on here who would agree, that throwing the anchor overboard and going below to cook dinner (!), can be called "setting" the anchor. That is not "setting" the anchor; that is hoping that God will choose to set it for you, rather than bidding it to skip over the bottom when the wind blows up.

Maybe you are specially beloved by the Almighty -- it sounds like it -- but nevertheless, please don't anchor upwind from me!

We see a lot of newbies throw the anchor of the side and sing that song.

Well, I did it a bit slower than described. Btw, it's blowing around 7 knots now and raining.

The boat turned and the wind was in my face before I went below.

The channel marker's bearing didn't move too much while I was cooking.

It's like when you want to stay over that good fishin' hole.......when you were a teen.

Samie, same

And it held during the storm:

"...throwing the anchor overboard and going below to cook dinner"
wrong Thomm225!
this is variation 1 of the "French set"!
variation 2 is: "...and jump into the dingi to go ashore for dinner!"

(in 14 years of peregrinations that's what we saw...!)

We'll I've been doing pretty much the same method in this general area on and off for about 40 years. Its seems to work and now I finally have a decent anchor although it is worn

When I say I threw the anchor over and went to cook there was a delay until I knew it was set. Maybe 15-45 seconds. The boat swing hard, wind in my face, etc, etc. (Wind was maybe 16 knots or so at that time)

I know the bottoms here.

I have yet to back down on an anchor here. That could change at a new location where I would anchor early and monitor like I did last night. I'm just glad I decided to stop early around 3 pm and get a spot for the night

I'm never not monitoring my boats position when anchored

Wind piped up and blew all night 20 -25 and I could get no closer to land. I awoke to 2' under the keel with the wind blowing offshore.

But it's gonna be a beautiful day!

It a good thing I set that CQR properly because it would have been difficult to deal with in the dark if it had come detached.

I have uncle Bruce as a backup but I've never used it

My biggest problem will be cleaning that black, gooey mud off the boat after I bring the anchor back onboard
