Total Rookie wanting to Learn

Hey everyone. Name is Alex im a 20 year old man living in Luperon, Domincan Republic at the moment. I´ve been waiting to get into sailing for a while now-and think i have a good oppurtiny to learn considering where im located. a few people have told me that maybe the best way to learn is to crew for free. Which is something i would love to do. Does anyone know how i can find these gigs or others- thanks alot

Short answer, go to where there are a lot of boats and hang around. Get to know some of the locals, maybe pick up a job at the local boatyard, marina, dockside bar, etc. Placses like the Virgin Islands have boats coming and going from owners, charter companies, etc.

Helps find a spot if you can bring other skills to the table. Can you do diesel engine repair, electrical work, wood work, varnish?

Aloha Alex,
Welcome aboard! I agree with Skipmac. If there are very inexpensive sailing schools in the area or clubs that offer lessons that might be another option.
Kind regards,
JohnL

Cheapest way to learn to sail that you pay for is dinghy sailing. Having a background that includes some expertise in the right words, plus knowing how to use the sails will definitely get you more free rides than being a total unknown.
