New, wanted to say HI

I'm John, retired fire fighter by trade. My wife and I are buying a 2001 46' fountaine Bahia from a member here and a friend found it here for us.. A member also. He said we needed to join! Not sure what to post: scuba instructor, I service flagpoles and communication towers, did rigging for a friends 104' live aboard dive boat, rescue background, new master captain (lol NOT A REAL captain yet) just getting started.
We live on a 65' house boat in Naples. Have a cat named CREW, who's more like a dog.
We hope to be fast learners with the catamaran live aboard life! Soon to start learning in the 10,000 islands, keys and Bahamas too!
Love the networking here on cruisers forum.

Re: New, wanted to say HI

John and Sara,
Welcome aboard. We lived in FL for a while and really liked it. There are lots of nice places to go and things to do there. We liked the West coast of FL the best. The water is the clearest in the Keys and taking your own boat to the Dry Tortugas is a great feeling.

CAUTION: If you received an email related to this post, it was not from me! Contrary to the "houseboat" image (my own bias) everything else on your list suggests bold adventure and overcoming challenges. I'd wish to hear of your adventures.

Re: New, wanted to say HI

John, Many of us here do not hire a rigger to complete tasks at the top of our mast. Most all of us trust lines that pass through sheaves across the top of the mast and we do not depend on blocks hanging to the side. Myself and others use a climbing harness or a bosun's chair with a redundant safety line to a second harness and are winched up the mast with some climbing assist. Sometime, take some time to tell us what techniques are used by professional firemen when climbing such things a flagpoles. I'm interested in alternate techniques and safety.

Welcome aboard! Too bad you don't live further north. I need someone to replace the transducer on my masthead and toss me down the old one so I can stomp it to death on my deck.
