Where do you sail from? There are a lot of channel connected lakes on the W coast. I was guessing Charlivoix. Have you cruised the North Channel yet?
South Haven. Haven't made it to the North Channel yet. When we retire we'll move the boat up to Traverse City and then it will be more within cruising range.

Most folks around the Great Lakes can walk on water ... at least for four months a year.

Yes we can Gord. We also drill holes in it and fish through it.

Welcome No Salt, we just moved our Catalina 320 from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. We love that area. Hope to someday cruise the Great Lakes in the summer and rent a house/cabin in that area in the winter. Come on cold and snow we need it. Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum. Originally from Lake Ontario, so I know the area.

Thanks. What marina were you in in TC? Was the move to SB to get further North?

Re: Hello from Michigan

We were going to build a cabin in the area (Glen Arbor,Mi) before we bought our first sailboat in 2008. My wife thought we would get more use out of the boat.... As of August this year, we are full time cruisers and now in Florida. I guess she was right about the boat being better for us, but I still would have loved to have property up there.

Re: Hello from Michigan

We were at Center Pointe marina, it was nice, but its mainly an office building. We had our 320 with Bay Breeze Yacht Charters for 3 years (paid for half the boat). But, now it's time to have it to ourselves. Suttons Bay marina is surrounded by parks and a block off Main Street, so you can walk to shopping and restaurants. We enjoy the small town atmosphere.

Re: Hello from Michigan

We sailed into Traverse Bay on our way south from the N Channel. It was in 30+ knots of N wind. Suttons didn't look so nice. We hove to in Bower's Harbor for three days. It was still N when we left and 10 -14 waves. Apparently, several boats were swamped in front of downtown TC. Sutton's as well as a few others looked pretty shakey. I suppose if you are in the municipal marina or other shelter it would be OK. Northport looks like better shelter.

Re: Hello from Michigan

Welcome aboard NoSalt. I grew up in Grand Haven and started sailing there in something about the size of a windsurfer. I still call GH home though I have lived overseas most of my life. We are currently on a cruise we call the Singapore- Great Lakes - Singpore Cruise. But life and funds mean we have to do it slow. But hopefully we will meet up in a few years.

Cheers

Mark

Re: Hello from Michigan

Welcome and come on down to South haven. We sail a Hanse 370, cruise the Lake (both sides) and do the Queens Cup race each year. Lake Michigan and the North Channel of Lake Huron are fabulous fresh water sailing venues and provide a varieties of experiences that can't be matched.

We love it up there. That's why we bought the lake house. Don't think I could do full time cruising. There are too many other things I like doing to focus on just one.
