Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
I currently live in Maine and I am in the process of searching for a boat to purchase. Does anyone local happen to own a Hanse 315 or Bavaria 34 and would be willing to let me come by and take a look? Would also be interested in your pros/cons list. My cruising grounds will be local along the coast here and Casco Bay, looking for a low 30's length, and need to be able to single hand and overnight for a few nights. These aren't the only boats I am considering but they are boats I haven't been able to see in person.
Thanks!

Re: Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
Welcome to CruisersForum!
I would suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797
I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.

Re: Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
You will be travelling thru zillions of lobster pots.
Suggest you consider pots vs the underwater profile of boat.
Some profiles are much better at not catching pot warp.
Cheers/Len

Re: Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
Hanse are among the weakest boats we have surveyed.
Example - Hanse 355 - While in a cradle I could deform the aft quarter by hand pressure on a brand new boat. The broker told be fiberglass boats are supposed to be flexible. extremely poor bulkhead support/design under the aft berth.
Some models also have keel bolts not accessible without major surgery, neither battery installations nor propane systems meet ABYC on any of the models we've surveyed ... Get a really good surveyor

Re: Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
Saying “ Bavaria” as a wish boat indicates an extremely broad budget range. Having sailed in Maine and bought a boat there, I would have to encourage you to consider a Hinckley Pilot, Bermuda 40 or SW 42. That’s a pretty broad price range there, which should overlap the Bavaria price spectrum. Hinckley yachts have been built to endure, are excellent sailors, have excellent re-sale- and they're built in Maine. Hinckley also handles the brokerage on many of their older boats, and have a pretty good idea of which boats are available. There can’t be any boat more suited to Maine cruising.

You may be onto something Jim...
That bulb keel will hook the pot warp, preventing warp from winding around the saildrive pot catcher,or wedging in the hull to rudder gap pot catcher....
Then, you just unscrew the keel bolts & bubble on. / Len

Re: Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
We had a full keel Downeaster 38 ketch and it would sail through lobster traps with no problem. Even motoring was no problem. It was the only boat that we have had that I felt comfortable motoring at night in Maine.

Re: Hanse or Bavaria in Maine
Did a windjammer cruise out of Camden several years ago. Sailed in Penobscot Bay for a week. Yes, many lobster pots but sailed through them with impunity on the Mary Day. But also noticed many rocks emerging barely above the surface. Then there are generally many days of thick fog. An older full keel boat might be the best choice for a beginner there. My Bavaria has a deep fin keel and spade rudder with no special protection. Probably not the best design for sailing around trap warps, kelp, and shallow rocky outcrops. A locally designed, locally produced boat is good advice. Many custom built yachts there I understand.
