A returning poser.....er, I mean poster!

Hey all,

I'm back after a long absence. I was missing the camaraderie here and also wanting to see what kinds of windlasses the serious cruisers are using. I'll start a new thread for that after I've done some poking around.

Anyway, how is everyone? I am hoping to hear from some of the old guard. Who's still here? I'm also looking forward to meeting new friends.

Cheers

Gamayun

Welcome back, Gamayun.

I don’t know how serious we might be considered to be, but I can share what we chose when we replaced all of the ground tackle when we purchased this boat in 2014: Lighthouse 1501. It is a beast, and is all cast 316 SS and bronze. [Very heavy] It is also the smallest windlass they make, and configurable as desired with single or dual gypsies and/or rope drums.

Here is our windlass story with lots more photos, external inks, and a synopsis of our decision making processes.

FWIW

Cheers, Bill

Super to have you back. Are you getting ready to go cruising?

I visited their facility back in the '90s.
Impressive machines, you don't see all that many of them.
I've not seen any other windlass that is in their class.
They were expensive then, I'm almost afraid to see what one costs today.

They are in a class of their own. I would have loved to tour the facility. What an opportunity you had. I suspect Jordan was in charge then?.

RE: Cost, I do not know current pricing, but another thing I believe unique to Lighthouse is they will refurbish your gypsies for 50% of new, and rebuild/refurbish a windlass for 25%. I know cruisers who have experienced both services, and have no regrets. [On edit: But it took decades of use before they needed such services…]

Cheers, Bill

PS: Another value add is they make custom deck and backing plates from SS- polished for the deck plate.

Here is our custom backing plate on top of the custom deck plate for reference to show shape and positioning before installation:

PPS: Gamayun , I apologize for jumping into the windlass conversation. I just noticed you mentioned plans to initiate a separate thread for that topic…

I couldn't testify as to his name; this was a bit over 30 years ago.
A friend of mind was a friend of the owner, and I was a "maybe prospective buyer".
My anchor roller set-up/spacing, and foredeck reinforcement were already configured to fit a Lighthouse.
Alas, didn't get one.
Mores the pity.

Hi Bill, what a great blog post. It has a lot of resources/information, some new terms (hammerlock moor), and the Lighthouse windlass looks fantastic. Thanks for sending

No worries! I still haven't gotten around to doing any more research on it and haven't posted a new thread either. It is a nice to have item at the moment. Just dreaming about projects for the future

Ha, you certainly must have meant "quantity." It's really nice to be back and hear from you all. I'll post more soon (quality or not). I've just gotten out of the habit of checking back in from time to time.

Hi Ann, so nice to see you, too. I hope you are well. I am mainly trying to get my boat back in shape after another trip to Hawaii and back last summer (2022). Then I took a corporate gig to work on obtaining permits for an offshore windfarm. There is too much keeping me busy and keeping my interest before I am ready to sail off.

Gamayun! Where have you been? Good to see you back and talking boats instead of offshore permits and such. Hope you’re sailing too!
Sorry, I have no advice on windlasses though. I’m still happily throwing out my back.
Btw let’s hear about your transpac highlights!

Thank you Gamayun.

I’m glad you found some possibly useful tidbits from our project.

Best wishes with your potential boat projects.

Cheers, Bill
