Not at all. Although, my ex wife claims to be a decendent of SFD, so I think that *does* give me claim to the title.

Government officials have said to me "step out of the car, Sir' and I think that acknowledgement of my title should be enough.
I still would rather be Fletcher Christian, though.

Well in the movies Christian has been played by Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson. Bligh played by Charles Laughton, Trevor Howard and Anthony Hopkins. Plus Fletcher Christian always ended up the the girl.
Based on Hollywood I say good choice.

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?
Interesting thread...
Good advice is good advice regardless of the source. Same with bad advice.
It doesnt bother me if someone is acting arrogantly as long as the advice they are delivering is good.
Even if it is some sailor who has only been sailing for a year and acting like a multi-circumnavigator. Dont care, if they teach me something new great.
Same with a real muilti-circumnavigator whois offering advice that is clearly a load of *****...
What I would like to see less of is the combativeness that can come out. It is one thing to argue a point, it is another to get too personal about it.
I know I have crossed this line more than once on the forum but I sure try to not do so and would love it if others did so less as well.
That said - the mods do a great job keeping things reasonably civil - even if they cant do anything about the infamous thread drift found on CF...

IMHO, the feature which makes this forum so attractive, is that just about all of us, readily admit to having "sinned" at some time or other---- except for DoJ, who is as pure as the driven snow.

This thread's drifted further than Bligh did in that little boat.

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?
I came on here to learn things I know nothing about.
I am doing just fine, Reading between the lines I get the info I need for me,
If I can add a bit, I do, But it is still a learning curve for me,
Thanks to the people who do know, I do pick up that knowledge quickly,

So there's hope for them yet! Looks like I won't need to cut the Union Jack out of the Ensign just yet...

now that you mention it I agree. Never liked Springsteen OR McCartney. Don't own a single song by either.

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?
Don't change the subject, Mr Fletcher......we were discussing Francis Drake......why is he such a bad example to emulate, anyway? Who is the alternative? And if folks are so on the nose, has a friendly PM been tried? And isn't the beauty of an internet forum that one can go back over rambling conversations and pick the plums, or at least get back on track? One can have fun and learn a heap at the same time....sad that tongue-in-cheek, and spirited ribbing and a pinch of satire and a dash of sarcasm is non PC. Cloning is a bad idea......do you really want two of me? (Put that sword down Mr Fletcher....)

Well said. Quite interesting, the more actual experience a person has the less opionated they become and the more humble!

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?
Rebel...good thread
I recently come over to Cruisers Forum from Sailnet where I used to post and get involved in some of the threads there. I find that the language is more civil here and there is more respect for each other.
In any internet forum you will incur your denizens, your imposters, your armchair Einsteins, and your crusty old salts. It is up to you to differentiate the no knowledge, from the good knowledge, to the best opinion youself. Experience sometimes is a great teacher, but if you do it wrong 1000 times it isnt the way I want to learn it.
I joined CF to gain more knowledge, share the commradiere of sailing, and hopefully pay it forward a little.
Every year for 5 years my wife and I sponsored a "Rondevous" at our club of the Sailnet posters who could make it, who kept their boats in the Chesapeake. Usually there were 15 boats which would show up physically with about 15-20 boats comming by land to join in. ( people who couldnt get the whole weekend off or were to far to make it by boat). We met in person many of the people and fellow internet posters.
It was quite an eye opener in a positive way. We have made many freindships and see at various times in our sailing season some of them anchored or sailing in our part of the Bay. In addition I have met in person some who live in the LI Sound and New England area as thats where we cruise for 3+ weeks every summer up there.
To me a sailor is a sailor, whether you are a newbie, old salt, have a hobie 16 or a Oyster 52, you use it on weekends, all years round or live abouard her. We all got into this to enjoy the water and other things.
I think there is something for anyone on here whether you are crusing around the world, sailing in your bay, sailing on a lake, or floating a rubber duckie and minituresailing dinghy in your hot tub. As long
as everyone maintains respect.
Dave
