Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?

This is a fine thread about opinions, over the years I have had a few. Everyone should be able to say what is on his mind- and state whether a concept has been tested out in the ocean. I have had quite a few nimble ideas dashed on the rocks when the sea state changed.
So I think we aught to welcome everyone. But if someone is recommending self-steering by tiller to sheet (as I often have)- it is only honest to stay were you got such an idea and how you have used it. Hopefully that will cut down on the amount of pseudo-knowledge going around.
As for Sir Francis and Capt. Bligh- I have never met either but I understand the later was quite a good navigator.

I'd like to know more about that myself.

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?

How many others are out there like myself that type out replies on threads and right before hitting the post button decide... Screw that, it'll just get me in trouble, then delete the entire post and move on?

I do it because I think sometimes I would come off looking stupid, and sometimes because I see the potential to derail a thread. Other times I just decide its best to let people keep to their opinions and I'll keep to mine.

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?

Have learnt heaps from this Forum and also made contacts that i hope to keep, that's what it should be about.

Sharing experience, experiences and knowledge just makes us stronger.

It doesn't take long to figure the trolls, same with the baiters BUT that just makes it all the more interesting.

Early days of club racing on a Saturday afternoon we always invited a newbie to come and observe our day, we found some fantastic crew this way, people who went on to buy their own boats and cruise/race. (and take on their own newbies)

Our first race we went the wrong way after the third mark humbling ourselves in front of the fleet and shouting the bar on our return.

My knowledge of computers and electronics is a bit scant, to say the least, but i'm comforted in knowing that i only have to ask the forum and my dumbest question will be answered.

Now that's pretty good because that can be from the most remote bay in the Adriatic as long as i have reception... There's some pretty switched on people in this group.

YESTERDAY i was researching chain joiners (crosby's) and i came across a post by the infamous JEDI it was not on this forum, it was dated 2008 and he was speaking of securing the bitter end by rope and not bolted which is the absolute way to do it.
Now after that post he came back and said "Attach 100ft of hollow ski rope to the end so if you have to dump it the line will float making later retrieval easier" ...
Thats gold, never heard of it before great stuff and it was passed on.
None of us know everything there's so much to learn....

Cheers

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?
I don't know,... yes; there is a lot of posturing, and blowharding especially on the gun & anchor threads, I've even done it myself.

But when I've asked a direct technical question about a specific boat, I've gotten 90% direct answers, that to the point I put them into practice, were correct.

Like any online forum, you got to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

I consider myself fairly knowledable, but there is a 1000years of collective experience that signs on to this site occaisionally.
I think he's calling Gord really really old.

Re: why do a few folks on CF think they are francis drake?

We really could do with a few Drakes right now.
His 1577 "circumnavigation", ordered by Elizabeth 1st, which was really to plunder to swell the English coffers, returned 47 pounds (> $75) for every 1 pound ( >$1.50) spent.
Put Britain on the map as a naval power.

I think this thread is especially funny considering some of the previous posts from the OP. Please stop. You're killing me...
