Sailing is "Too Complicated" for "Pirate"

Some things you just can't make up:

PORT ORCHARD — A 34-year-old man who told Bremerton police officers that he was tired of the concrete and wanted to “sail like a pirate” was arrested Thursday in the Bremerton Marina after trying to commandeer a $335,000 sailboat.
The Port Orchard man was charged Friday in Kitsap County Superior Court with first-degree theft along with first-degree malicious mischief after he caused more than $5,000 in damage to the boat trying to unlock one of its steering wheels, according to court documents.
The man told officers he intended to sail to Bellingham to be with his girlfriend and had not slept on the vessel but had gone below deck to “watch porn on his phone.” One officer noted it was difficult to interview the suspect, as he behaved as though he was under the influence of drugs.
Police were notified of the boat theft by the owner, a Bainbridge Island man, who received a phone call from the suspect. The suspect told the owner he planned to take his boat to Bellingham, but that it was “too complicated” to sail. The boat is a race boat that has two steering wheels and is very difficult to navigate inside the marina.
The owner had posted his name and phone number on the boat in case of emergency, which is how the suspect was able to call him.

I'm moving to Port Orchard in a couple of weeks to be with my boat. This is not comforting. Are the marinas there more susceptible to such intrusions than other places or is it all about the same risk?

Anywhere there are boats this sort of thing can happen.

Re: Sailing is "Too Complicated" for "Pirate"

I was just thinking of other reasons our dear pirate might call to complain:

-- Wrong anchor type on bow!

-- Discovers that boat is a monohull and not a catamaran.

-- Wrong sorts of armament on board.

-- Has in-mast reefing.

-- Discovers possible soft spot in balsa-cored deck.

Piracy just ain't what it used to be.

Re: Sailing is "Too Complicated" for "Pirate"

This is one of the most stupid criminal stories I've read As I understood this guy wasn't in his mind totally and besides it seems that he couldn't sail on this boat so what was the reason for stealing it?
But yeah, that contacts of owner made me to laugh a bit, it seems that it has sense in leaving them in this way

Re: Sailing is "Too Complicated" for "Pirate"

Sooo many threads on this guy.
There was a similar theft in PDX a few years ago... the thief couldn't escape to the sea because he couldn't figure out how to get the railroad bridge to open. Probably the best outcome for him, because he certainly wouldn't have been able to figure out how to cross the Columbia River Bar.
