gun ads on CF??

Since CF has an explicit policy discouraging the discussion of firearms, I was astounded to see this gun-related advertisement imbeded in a CF thread.

Re: gun ads on CF??

I thought the intent of the policy was to try to prevent pointless flame wars.

And this post seems to be intended to start one.

I find the complain far more problematic than the ad.

Re: gun ads on CF??

Few websites have control over the ads shown.

They just embed the agency's code, e.g. Google actually decides what to show, often based on an individual's browsing profile.

Would’ve had a real laugh if the OP had been complaining of porn ads Probably would be best to delete your browser history before the wife finds out lol

There are a variety of categories that AdSense will let a site trivially block. Weapons are not one.

One might also block by specific URL, if they wanted to take the manual effort.

Re: gun ads on CF??

We know what you've been searching for or looking at!

Yep, that ad was targeted at what Google knows about you and your internet activities (including both your web activities and all your emails if you have a gmail account). The fact that you saw it while you were viewing CF says nothing about CF other than that they gain revenue from google ads.

I'd be very cautious about telling people what google ads I see.

Re: gun ads on CF??

Agree the ad was based on personal browsing history. But have to point out that the AI used to determine which ads show up is far from perfect. As a slightly over weight retired white male I frequently see ads for women's bikinis and wigs for black females. Not to mention cosmetics and meds that I would never use. Not to mention the standard IKEA ads which seems strange for a boat owner in general; but even stranger since I get most of my stuff at the dumpster at the marina and would not be caught dead buying from IKEA. Just as an aside there is some kinda weird ad for a mantle that fits over a fire place but has a hidden compartment that shows pistols being stored in it. Since I have neither a fire place, a place to put a mantle, or guns to store in it I have to wonder how I was targeted for that ad.

Whew that's a relief to hear, I thought CF had a thing for promoting young Taiwanese...…………….ummmmm golfers, yup that's it golfers. Glad that mystery is cleared up. So anyways back to guns and NOT golfers, what kind of guns do you have, do you carry golf clubs...…..wait I Mean guns on board, ya guns?

Now that we can all see that you've schooled yourself up on your state's concealed carry laws, have you decided whether you'd like something for a holster? Or would you prefer a smaller semi-auto for pocket carry? A Smith & Wesson in 9mm perhaps? Too bland? Maybe a small stainless revolver in .38?? And don't forget extra ammo. Seems like every time a politician utters anything about gun control the shelves get cleared of the stuff.

Note that some advertisers don't do targeting, display to everyone.

And yes of course the keyword / categories used are very rough, but you can bet the tech will keep improving.

I wish there was better "stop showing me this offensive crap" user controls, and not just on ads.

Too funny...I recover stuff at our Condo dumpster and it usually is from IKEA. I sell it on CL but I have kept some decent things over time.

Well, in SailOar's defense, I'm just noticing an ad for some sort of prescription medication that I have absolutely no possible need for. Nor have I been researching or shopping for meds, and don't take any. It's one of these drugs that you're urged to "talk to your doctor" about.

Again: some advertisers don't do targeting, display to everyone.

Also, it is trivial to ensure you never see **any** ads, but then you should consider donating to sites you consider valuable, especially those that are small businesses.

Not sure how anything posted by 3 other members in between your two posts warranted an "Again I need to reiterate myself" type post, but I guess that's how one can average 6000 posts a year.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Your wealth of knowledge astounds me.
