Re: gun ads on CF??
All the more reason to run ad blockers. I don't see any ads I don't want to. It makes CF, and the whole WWW, a lot more pleasant.
BTW, I don't plenty to CF. I donate my time and content. I choose not to be forced to see ads I neither asked for, not want.

When I read your post 22 ads were blocked. Totally out of control. I refuse to see the ads. Any website that tries to force me to give up ad blocker is gone.

Like you, I use an ad blocker on my PC, but I happened to be using a smartphone, which I haven't locked down quite as well.
After recently reading this NY Times article on protecting your cell phone I thought I was protecting myself better, but apparently not

I don't mean to sound crazy, but i have read and seen in my personal experience that your devices, mainly phones, can and do listen passively to your conversations. Meaning you talk about a new stove long enough, you'll see ads for it online.

Absolutely, also things your behaviour implies even without you mentioning it.
I would bet a lot of money that suicides could be greatly reduced, if the authorities cared enough and
the big tech firms were willing to admit their AI's are that far along.

That'll likely be followed by ads for law firms that starts out "If you took [that drug] and died from it, you should contact us to sue everybody and their brother..."

Good little article. I was pleased to see I do all those things. Of course it's more than ironic that this NY Times page shows that my ad blocker is blocking seven ads, and even worse, seven hidden background trackers.
I'm no expert on all this stuff, but I have spent some time and effort protecting my privacy (while not becoming a complete hermit). I do think it is harder to maintain our privacy on mobile devices. The very foundation of these things is built on constant tracking and monitoring, after all.
I'm not sure if this is actually a better option, but the Tapatalk app on my iPad does not show any ads when looking at CF.

It was an advertisement, like the one I'm suddenly seeing for an RV.

Re: gun ads on CF??
And 70% off for a backpack, and the usual boaty-related ones, and ... HA! ... one from a law firm (that Ranger probably sent ). Are you suffering from [insert disease/device defect]? "We can help."
Those with ad-blocker apps are clearly missing out.

Yup... better than going to therapy or climbing Machu Picchu. The best way to "know thyself" is to look at all the ads that surround you.
As a magazine writer to learned to always study the ads when I was pitching to a new market. This was a far better way to understand who the magazine was actually targeting, rather than believing what the 'contributor's guidelines,' or listening to what the editors said.
Advertisers and marketers have always been very good at knowing who we really are, not who we say we are. And now Google et al. has taken this to a whole new level (of understanding, and intrusion).

Personally, I find the ads for merchandise rather harmless, and the boaty ones occasionally useful since I'm always curious about the latest & greatest tech from places like Ocean Planet and the like. The other ones on CF I tend not even to "see". But I don't have TV so am not saturated with advertising. It's also starting to have the unintended effect of a deterrent to clicking onto a website since I don't want to have to deal with the inevitable follow-up.
What's a bit more troubling are political ads on places such as YouTube, especially when you see them during actual election cycles and related to specific candidates & issues. The numbers of these don't seem to be weighted towards one side or the other, but are instead equally obnoxious. Not sure if there's any way around this one, other than becoming a 'Patreon' member of the youTube channel itself.

Out of all the adverts a site that makes draconian laws easier to understand, I’d think that would be cool with CF, not to mention how most gun and ammo taxes go into conservation, and freedom being a strong theme in sailors?
Not sure all that’s on that site, but this is a bookmark in my phone, click a state and all the important laws and reprocity are easily broken down.

Again out of all the sites, surprised that one got hate on here
