He was a commodities trader, and she (I think) was a secretary before their first circumnavigation. Apparently he was very good at what he did (/does?), and they made good investments. He said they always lived well below their means (even when working), and saved, saved, saved.

You have to become really good and lucky as a commodity trader, which is what Pat did before they took off at 29. Also, they live pretty frugally, aside from the airplane trips which seem to occur with some frequency, but who is to say that they are not last minute deals?

They may have lived frugally on land, but not cruising. their blog said they spent about $43K on their trip if I remember right.

You can read exactly how much they spent, and for what, month by month here, including notes of extraordinary expenses.

I don't see much extravagance there.

Re: Bumfuzzles Are On The Move and Sailing

Looks like I was thinking of someone else.
Their expenses were well over $100K
$800 per month +/- for food is not frugal
Don't get me wrong, I loke them and wish I had their funds,.

Wow, if you had read the blog, you would have known that they were not using the old tank (quote) "But in fact our port tank, the only tank this engine has run off of since we moved aboard, is a brand spanking new plastic tank and never had a drop of fuel in it or run through its brand new fuel lines." (unquote)

And you would have known that it was a fuel pump problem, not a bad tank or bad fuel.

No wonder Pat has little time for those that think they dont know anything. I wonder how many that feel like knocking Pat and Ali had actually circumnavigated themselves.

Wow, if you had read the blog, you would have known that i2f's post preceded the Bums' post about the new fuel tank by quite a way - roughly 30 hours. Their post has only been up about 10 hours.

Nice try.

Pat and Ali were high school sweethearts in Minnesota and have been together since they were 15. They come from a typical, middle-class, suburban background. Pat was adopted.

After college, Pat got into commodities with a Minneapolis firm, learning the grain futures business from one of the smarter traders there. With a keen intellect and the ability to quickly do math in his head, Pat excelled.

Filled with the brave confidence of youth, the Schultes moved to the Big Leagues . . . in the commodity trading business, that means Chicago. Pat obtained a seat on the Board of Trade, trading for his own account, primarily. I don't know if he took orders for others.

As I've written before, he not only fearlessly jumped into the deep end with the sharks and survived, he also got out of the pool with all his parts intact and a nice cushion to let them live their lives as they wished. While Pat was actively trading on the CBOT, they lived off Ali's income as a secretary.

For anyone who wants to follow in their footsteps, I'll pass along what Ali has said to those who expressed that wish to her . . . "What do you know about soybeans?"

avb,

Since you started the thread, and have been following, and commenting all along. Perhaps you missed this one. I am not, and have not ever roasted them.

My apologies to the reader that thinks we should P.M. It is still about the Bumfuzzles, and the controversy they raise. Isn't the point of a thread to discuss it?.........i2f
